so i've searched around the internet for good bass learning videos and sites, but haven't found anything very substantial.

what are your recommendations for a good place to go for some really good bass lessons that are free, i'm coming along nicely, but i just want some kind of structure to my learning

I really love this book...
http://www.amazon.com/Leonard-Bass-Method-Easy---Use/dp/0793563836/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307042825&sr=8-1

and when you are finished with that...

get one of the speicality books according to the genre you want to play... for example for blues ...
http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Bass-Essent ... 914&sr=8-1

being a good reader is not crucial... but being able to at least read is important imho...

Playbassnow.com is one of the best ones, the main fellow goes by MarlowDK,he is a really well rounded bassist,I will leave it at that for not wanting to start a war on who's better than who stuff(more on that in talkbass.com OR if you have'nt had enuff yet Activebass.com)he explains it,plays it,then slows it down smoooothly.
I would only recommend this site to anyone, there are others but in my exp. with on-line lessons they dont get much more complete than this one,and MarlowDK is a supernice guy and will answer any questions about bass you may have,good-dude!

So Josey Wales, you're very curious. Sabre and pbassbob seem to like you or, they're setting you up, either way, you'll float, everybody floats here. Don't be afraid of sewers, they're cool and dark and quiet, Georgie likes them, you'll like Georgie, he floated too!

I've got a pretty balloon for you, you can't see it but it has your name on it!

Sounds like you are endorsing him for membership. Should he go through the initial filters, you know this better than most, he'll have to endure the initiation of your creation. New law is: Anyone bringing forth a candidate will make the decision as to iniiation, length, type and severity.

I'm sure you'll be reasonable should it progress. We really should have talked to Stroker before we let him take that last one. Did they ever find him? Stroker can get so forgetful.

Don't forget, if said candidate makes it past initiation, they must overcome the "Seven Caves Of Dementia".

I love initiations!

I think josey is OK...he did a heck of a job sprucing up that Squier that he got, putting a lot of work and effort into it.

Not to mention, he likes sewers!

As far as Sabre...how could he go wrong with the name of a Clint Eastwood character?

if you like my spruce up job on the pbass you should see my other projects on other guitars.
