These new Squier's which I assume are basically CV series basses Rock Balls! With only a few minor upgrades they kill!!! The same upgrades I had to do to my MIM Fenders I should say. So why pay close to $600 for the fender when these are this good?? Of course not as good as my 98 american standard but..... The neck is just awesome on this bass and feels alot like my 50's P, just not as wide. Same tint and finish. Squier hit a home run here!

You've posted your thread on a wrong discussion lounge.

This page is for genuine Fender P-Basses, not Squier models.

You can go to the "Squier Bass Guitars" sub-forum and start a new thread there.

True the post is in the wrong lounge, but it's probably acceptable since he's also expressing an opinion, if negative, about the Fender Standard P-Bass as relating to the Squier Matt Freeman model. Some people have trouble finding the Squier forum for some reason and wind up posting here.

I consider the original post in this thread far more relevant to Precision Bass than lots of the NCIP chatter, clown photos, etc posted in the Fender P-Bass Lounge that has nothing whatsoever to do with electric bass, much less specifically a Fender Precision Bass. These off topic posts are amusing like watching an old Three Stooges short. But eventually a steady diet of Three Stooges shorts will leave you bored.

The Matt Freeman Bass is not really a Classic Vibe (CV) model, but a Signature Series model. I do agree that for the money you can not beat today's higher end Squiers. I've posted about them here myself.

But (and this is experience speaking here) buying any bass with the idea of upgrading it right out of the box is rarely a good idea beyond putting your favored strings on it Can't anyone be happy with a stock bass anymore? Time was that they were all "stock" and you were just glad to have one.

One thing to remember its not just something as simple as swapping out hardware or pick-ups in a 279.00$ bass that now makes it as good as a bass lets say costs around 600.00$,There's also the issue of Quality of the wood being used which in my book is probably as or more so important than some tuners, bridge or pick-ups that are easy to change out.
Lower quality(beginner/entry level/back-up bass ETC..)no disrespect meant please, are made of lower quality wood, there's a few things that fit that statement, green wood for example is much newer and contain's more moisture so whats the big deal ? well its heavier due to more density which some believe does'nt radiate sound as well, then the neck if green will have a tendency to "move" a bit more requiering more adjustment to maintain proper relief, and under the correct circumstances can allow the neck to warp/twist ETC....
Also the finish though not necessarely falling short in the looks dept but more likely to be applied thicker which can muffle the tone and not allow the wood to dry out and become more resonant.
So in MY experience just swapping pick-ups and maybe adding a badass bridge does'nt always equal out to the smae overall quality as a more expensive bass,It will make the guitar sound/play better but the old saying goes"You can put a tuxedo on a pig but at the end of the day its still a pig",I thought the same way before I got into repairing and building basses and you could'nt tell me otherwise that a few mods will equal out to a higher end bass,I had to learn by trail and error,in the end of it all as long as the bass plays and sounds the way YOU like then thats all that matters.
