i agree either bend the cover slightly to fit, or use velcro. on my p bass i put on a thumb rest and did a stupid thing of drilling the hole when the strings were off and having it to close to the stings, so now i have 2 extra hole in my bass, but it's covered by the thumb rest i didn't have to move it that far, but in case you decide to take it off you don't want an extra random hole..

i have a bridge cover and the bass wasn't pre dilled so i measured it out and set it up and just drilled the holes for it and it worked great, but if i do get a pickup cover i will probably drill the holes, but then again mine isn't pre-drilled. and i can always get a new pick guard.

I saw an ashtray cover that was used for exactly that back in the day. Hence "Ashtray". I'm just sounding like a brainiac aren't I?

I did the opposite...when i got my first P Bass in '69, the very first thing I did was remove the pickup cover.

Well that's what we ALL did back then....
(OK... I did it in 76-ish)
Although in 1969, I was only 4 years old....) :P

And as far as the "ash-trays" went back then.... Don't ask!

Do I regret doing that stuff now?
(Ayuh!)

I was -29 years old in 69. My dad was only 8

man guys i was born in 1985... a product of the 80's and i love it.... but i love the vintage feel and look of the ashtrays, i was looking all over the place for one, and a friend of mine sent me one from GA so it worked out, but then i went into the guitar shop and the kid was like 2 days after you were in here i found one, and he gave it to me, but turns out it's to small, i guess it was for a tele.

Bend the cover until it fits. That's what I did, it's easy enough.

Jorma lives not all that far from me. He always has something going on down there in the hills. Lot's of blue grass stuff and folk stuff. It's really nice down in those hills. Tons of really nice cruising roads. OH YEAH!!!!

Holy lotsa responses here! Thanks for the insights everyone. I guess for now I'm best off leaving the cover off the bass, but the suggestions of bending the cover or using velcro will be considered. I still plan on using it one way or another. Paid for it, might as well use it. :P

Garf,
I finally picked up a replacement for my Pickup cover for my old 66 P bass to replace the one I took off in 69. A very gentle bending and the holes aligned perfectly and the screws went right into the old holes. Now I am having my old Kustom tuck and roll amp head repaired. I even still have the old Nehru shirt and Headband from those days.
If only I could get my body back to 1969!

Hi FJ bass!
It is a basic black head, no sparkles.
I put it on a huge bassman cab, that I sold after deciding that Medicine was a more secure and rewarding ( in many ways) future than music- yet here I am coming back to bass music and loving it. Now I get to decide what cab to pair with the old Kustom 200. I did get a Bassman TV 12, which has a really great sound, but am still sentimental over the old amp. If anyone has any suggestions on a good cabinet I would welcome them. I like playing classic rock, blues and swing.
