I don't know if anyone else experienced this, but for the sake of asking and not driving myself crazy, has anyone ever encountered alignment issues with pre-drilled pickguards? I recently acquired a chrome pickup cover and thought it would make my life easier by having a pre-drilled 'guard. I have the '57 gold pickguard but strangely the holes on the 'guard do not align with the cover's holes.

Anyone ever experienced this or is it just me?

The aluminum pickguards have a different screw pattern, using 10 holes, than the plastic, 13-hole items. They do not interchange. You have to order a plastic one with the 10-hole pattern.

Oh no, its not about whether the pickguard fits or not. The pickguard did fit without any problems, its the chrome cover that confuses me as the holes on the 'guard seem to be too close to each other. I was kinda hoping if anyone experienced this 'cos I don't really wanna drill new holes if the 'guard is already pre-drilled.

There's nothing odd about that at all. Ever since long ago and forever I have encountered all sorts of discreptancies with Fender and aftermarket P guards and covers and almost every part on a Fender bass.. I have a P bass chrome cover that won't even fit over the pick ups. The guy sold it to me as a P bass item. I guess not. You just have to do what ever you want. I've had replacement Fender guards that don't line up on the right bass for the guard. I've filed holes into oblong holes, sanded, trimmed etc every kind of guard. It is a very standard thing to have non alignment. There are times when everything is a "go"-- It looks like you need more research to gain the knowledge as to what is exactly up with your situation. I say welcome to the club. It ain't never gonna' change. I think the best thing to do is always take your guitar to the store with you when buying parts for it. That's the best way. Oh and I guess you can't do that when buying from the web--- so what to do is the question. It all sucks.

Eh, I never thought it would be this troublesome to replace or add a simple part. For the time being I guess I'm better off leaving it as it is. Thanks for the insight though, I'll keep it in mind next time I'm ordering parts.

Oh and oxfan, that image just scares me.

Seriously, a solution to your "don't want to drill" situation is velcro. I used it on all three of my basses until this weekend, I'm talking about a few years. I was extremely paranoid about digging into the wood.

For a pick up cover it will work great and when you want it off, it doesn't leave any residue.

The idea of using velcro sounds pretty good. I'll have to give that a shot, thanks! If it does go down well, I'll post pics of the upgrades instrument. If not, you'll still get pics. I love the way it looks. :P

The problem here is that there are at least THREE different screw spacings for P-Bass pickup covers that I know of and possibly even more variations. The three basic variations are the First Generation model (51-56 and also used on the CBS era Telecaster Bass), Second Generation Fender (57-65), CBS era (CBS changed the covers sometime after 1965.) Each time the cover changed the screw holes moved. So the '57 RI would have Pre-CBS screw spacing meaning you would need a Pre-CBS cover which will cost a pretty penny. The reproduction pickup and bridge covers were initially made for Custom Shop issues, but caught on among owners of mass produced instruments. These repro covers are essentially reissues of the CBS era dimension covers, so no they will not fit the pickguard pre-drilled mounting holes on Pre-CBS models or most Reissues of Pre-CBS basses.

To make them work on Pre-CBS spacing you have to drill. I would think long and hard about it first.

Bend the pickup cover. That worked with my Mex '57 Precision.
