I ordered the Matt Freeman Squier P for my next project. Love the black on black and maple. Wiring kit with Orange Drop from Bass parts resource, Quarter Pounder I have laying around Fender Chrome nobs,Schaller tuners. Should kick butt when I'm done! If I wanted to be real sneeky, I have a few 70's Fender logos I could put on but I dont like to do that.

That is a very handsome bass. When you're done, you should have something remarkably like the Roger Waters sig. bass, for far less money.

I used to have a black on black '78 Strat with a maple neck - I miss that guitar! Looked as cool as heck, and didn't sound bad, either 8)

Got it yesterday, put in the wiring and pick up, the neck feels very good! The bridge is excellent, these Squiers keep getting better and better! I have to say that the VM and CV definatly give the MIM Fenders a run for there money!

No-one should look down their noses at Squiers. I've a 2002 Squier Standard Telecaster that's just a good Tele, period. I've A/B'd it with a friend's USA Teles, and although it's a bit rough compared to the build quality, the sound and playability's really not that bad in comparison. (The neck's a dream, nearly perfect.)

With a bass, I do suspect a pickup swap's in order. The Squier P-Basses I've heard are just weak-kneed compared with my Fender '70RI, but the J-Bass is not too bad at all. But drop in SD Basslines or similar, and they come alive. I'm seriously considering buying a Squier Standard J-Bass, and replacing the pups with SDs. I wouldn't use a J-Bass enough to justify a US Standard, but a Squier, well yes, I could spend that sort of money, and still have a very decent bass indeed as a backup, and for certain numbers that need that hollow J-Bass thing...
