I've had a Squier 50s Precision Bass (like the model above) for a couple months now. The only problem I've had with it is when I play finger-style (I play rather aggressively) the low-E string often gets caught underneath the bobbin on the pickup, popping it out of place and exposing the innards. Ever since the last time this happened, when I roll the tone knob back, the sound gets really weak, even on full volume I can hear the acoustic sound of the strings over the sound from the amp. When the tone is rolled completely forward, the sound is fine (It actually sounds a bit more punchy and raw, and I sort of like it), it's only a problem when the tone is rolled back. I should also note that this time, some (But not a lot) of the copper wire coiled around the pickup came off with the bobbin, and I snipped the little bits that were still sticking out after I popped it back on, but the problem was happening before I snipped them, so I don't think it's related.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?
Am I looking at having to get an entirely new pickup, or is it repairable?

Thanks in advance.

I'd stand to be corrected, but I've a nasty feeling that the only possible repair would be a rewind, which would be far more expensive, and more trouble, than a replacement, especially given that replacement Squier pickups are not expensive. In fact, while you're about it, why not drop in a Seymour Duncan Basslines SCPB-1, which should be a direct replacement, and which will sound even better than the one you've just managed to knacker

Aw crap, I was afraid of that. However, I do like the look of that Duncan pickup you mentioned. When the bank account isn't so dry, I just might give her a go.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

You could try asking a local repairer, just in case I'm wrong...

Funny thing, I'd noticed the little lip on that Squier single-coil pickup, and I'd thought it looked a bit fragile. I hadn't thought of popping it off with the E-string, but I can see I might do that myself. Luckily for me, I play a '70 RI P-Bass with the split coil US Vintage pickup, so I'm immune to this ailment

According to brotherdave, if you use it (the pickup) for a thumb-rest, that will destroy it also... He knows from personal experience.

Just found the quote on Br Dave's site - priceless! I very rarely do rest my thumb on the pickup, as it happens, but it appears those '51 single-coils, whether they're Fender or Squier, are just a very fragile design. As Br. Dave says, that big old lump of chrome (which you don't get with the Squier, unfortunately) is at least a safeguard against these troubles!
