I wouldn't hesitate at all in putting SPB-3's in, they are great. Fletch would vouch for them too if he were here. I would put new pots in too, for the cost, it's worth it.

SPB-3's are very good indeed. IMHO a more modern, slightly brighter sound than SPB-1's or Fender American Vintage (which I use) but none the worse for that, and they have a nice growl to them. So +1 for the SPB-3's!

well we will see, i do want to put all new electronics in wires and all :D i'm an electronics major, so i have no issue with soldering, and following diagrams, or just following whats already there, then it would feel like i built it all myself HA..

the problem is money... however fathers day is sunday so we'll see what the munchkin (or my wife acting for him) get me, i've hinted :D

Is the buzz from the pickups or the bass itself ? the buzz MAY be from the neck not being adjusted correctly allowing the strings to rattle on the frets, have you ever had the bass set-up(neck relief, intonation, pickup and string height and some general mtnce)you may also have a few high frets which can be adressed but not at this moment.
It could also be very much the pickups or the vol and/or tone pots or maybe the output jack which is sometimes caused by dirt/dust or bad grounding, poor soldering or even poor shielding, there are a few variables but knowing if its mechanical or electrical is half the battle, once you know where it is then we can find out what it is.
Either-way its not the end of the world,as long as the noise does'nt interfere with the playing or ability to amplify it then dont swet it.
BTW try spraying all the electronics/pots etc...with electrical/contact cleaner and turn the pots all the way on and all the way off as you spray them, theres a little hole on the side give it a tiny blast while turning it back and forth, spray everything down a little blast at a time,if its dirt on dust on the contact points it will def. help.

Filing frets scares me  It's so easy to ruin them, and then it means a re-fret :(

Around here there's a small(ish) concern called Harmony Music, a Christian firm, whose bread & butter is AV & sound installations and school instruments, but who keep a music shop and a small team of techs. Anything more than string height and intonation I leave to them, and a v good job they do too - AND they give you a discount if you play in church!

Anywhere like that around you?

There was a place in Miami, Styles I think was the name. Did great guitar work. They reconstructed a Gibson SG Custom that was crushed on stage when an Acoustic 260 went over on it.

well see the issue is i have no money for some pro to do that, and i have build several guitars out of parts, so in doing that i have been able to teach myself with the help of techs, how to do anything i would need to do, i can set up, change electronics, set up the neck truss rod, all that stuff, and i have done that with this bass, i know the set up is good, in fact several folks i know who are good bass players have played it and found it good with no buzz, and i know it's my finger strength because when i get the buzz i press harder and it works fine, and sometimes because i'm used to electric when i'm trying to fret i hit the actual fret because they are bigger, and that causes problems, but this is still in my learning and i'll get there when i get there :D

Like I said, I don't know any techs down here that I'd trust with my axxes... The ones at the stores aren't very good, and the ones on Craig's List really scare me. :)

Can I set up a guitar or a bass? Absolutely.

Can I set up a guitar or bass NEARLY as well as my tech, who's been doing it for a living since 1977? Ahhhh.....NOPE!

And....he's reasonably priced....he'd rather the repeat business and the referrals than to charge on the high end of the range.

It's a no brainer for me....and I enjoy hanging out and shooting the breeze with him while he works on them!

well i will probably take it when i go to purchase my parts this coming week and have my tech look it over. and let me know if anything needs, or should be done.

i mean i'm not trying to be all self centered, "oh look at me i can set up a guitar, i'm the bomb", i was just stating the fact that i can do it, so thats the first thing i did, and i am aware of it :D

i really hope no one thought badly of me.

Not me :D

I'm much the same as you, Josey - bridge adjustments, no problem; truss rod - well, OK, if I'm careful; filing frets, NOOO!

(I can solder in extremis, but I'd rather not :? )

hmm i've never had to file frets, but id like to give it a shot when needed :D, thats why i have a guitar that i do guinne pig stuff on, it was free and if i need to do something that i don't know what i'm doing i try it out on that one first haha..

but soldering is no problem for me at all, i took an electronics trade school class in high school that was a big part, also in all the classes in college soldering is practically a requirement, so i've got no issues with that :D

SPB-3 will make the bass louder and fatter- I think it will still sound like a Pbass! I put them in my Sting (now the Cowboy Bass) and it sounds loud and proud with good tone .

gotcha bob, then ok, i didn't want to sound like someone else and be all high and mighty in what i think is skill, however i'm very happy and i guess proud of what i can do, and do well, it's nice to be self reliant when it comes to that stuff haha, but yeah i know for a fact that a tech can do a much better job then i can, but none of my stuff is high end, so i don't worry about it.

ok so i got the SPB-3's in (fathers day present) :D

but i also replaced all the electronics in it, and had a volume problem, so me and sabre decided to put my old electronics back in and it worked :D aside from my ground issue.. .

so for now i'm gonna use that, i think i'll try to build a circuit outside the bass with those ones or something one of these days to see whats up, but for now it is what it is...

heres some pics
