guys, thanks for the advice, i appreciate it, and i am working in the pinky, it's to weak to keep the strings down at the moment and i get buzz buzz buzz, but the lesson book i got calls for pinky, so it's helping, and i'm trying exercises to help it along. pretty soon i will have it,

thanks for the link to scales, i need to get them down and memorized, and i will be playing with a drummer and guitarist as soon as i can find them, even worship team at church would help with that.

when i play with the recordings i do sing along, i didn't on the videos because i'm not sure of my vocals at the moment :D

and chef thanks for your advise too :D

the action is good, and it's set up correctly, at least thats something that i know about and am really anal about :D my pinky just doesn't have the power to push the string tight enough against the fret board.

Go get a tennis ball or a grip master. Keep using them until you don't even realize you're doing it.

They are very weak in most people. Only practice and exercise will strengthen the poor little things. When I was learning I used to use my right wrist as a bass neck, and lock down my 2 middle fingers, then beat out patterns as hard as I could with my 1st & 4th fingers. I could do that when I was reading, sitting on the bus, etc. (Not advised when driving !)

We have decreed that you will work your pinky on the bass without the amp turned on for a MINUMUM of 1 hour per day... NO EXCUSES!! You will learn to play harder and cleaner like that!....

One hour a day! What are you, a girly man? You must play every morning before you go to work for an hour. Then you must play at night. On days off you will rise three hours early to make up for your lack of spirit!!!

i like your plan guys, one problem, with having to work a bunch, then give attention to the baby, and then the wife needs attention too, i'm lucky if i get an hour a day to practice at all :(

so obviously would prefer a method outside of my guitar to practice pinky strength and i heard those finger exercisers were not worth it.

That's why I used my other wrist - you've always got it with you

I know... it's just a motor skill, like learning to use a manual gearshift. It'll come with - you must be getting fed up with this word! - practice

The stronger your grip is the better. I know that not everyone has strong hands, it can't hurt. The hand exercisers also keep your fingers flexible.

Hey guys!
Break out the violins! Quickly!
:P

So you think none of the guys on here played for pay AND raised children? :?

You'd be VERY surprised! :D

But don't worry, there are enough current and former pros in the NICP and you can count on us to abuse you to greatness...
(Think Bass Boot Camp!)

We'll cut your learning curve in half if you'll work with us and at least try to do some of the things you've been advised to do.... 8)

I totally agree with that, but just out of curiosity, where did you hear that?

Play by (not with!) yourself to the point that you're confident enough to hook up with a drummer and a guitarist in or slightly above your skill level...
At that point, when you hear yourself rocking out you'll have much more motivation to play harder, learn harder and get better.

It's not practice when your enthused by what you're doing.

well i guess i could take the bass up and practice pinky strength and fingering when i'm watching the baby, if i'm doing exercises without the amp... and i will do the things you guys advise, i want to get good, so i'm all ears..

i heard they were bad from everyone i've ever talked to about them, even the dudes at GC say they are a waste of money. so idk.

Dude....
He's 25, not 55! :P

Break them in by playing harder and longer.
Build the correct and useful muscle and coordination.

see this makes sense, i was told by a friend of mine when i started the 6 string to just sit on the couch with the guitar and keep going over and over chord shapes, not playing them, just the shapes then your muscles learn the patterns, it has to be the same thing on the bass :D
