congrats josey, you're doing well for an april-birdie... good groove and timing (and that's the most important for bassists)
check your little finger* into your playing, practice the circle of fifth and the major- and minor-pentatonics and the future is yours.

*as a beginner i used to play without too and it toke me months then to accommodate my playing with it. :!:

great one, keep it up!

I have investigated Dbtoys. I'm finding that he may be of good charactor and an upstanding citizen of some question which does make him fodder for the likes of the NICP. I would hold off however briefly as we examine his ability to become Watson. That position is of high regard and would take a special ability to deal with our vast memborship of skallywags and wayward souls. This is not an elementary observation as I indeed have many theories as to motiffs and inherant qualities in the observations made upon the set in stone manner of which we all rotate in a downwardley spiral into the abyss.

WATSON!!!...... I SAY WATSON!!!! WAIT..... there is no Watson.....how will I go on? WILSON!!!!!! WILLLLLSONNNNNNNN!!!!!!!! Wilson. ?

Yes... Wilson shall be my assistant. He has agreed. It is now me and Wilson- partners in super something-- I don't know.

technique===== practice fingering== first fret first finger=== second fret second finger === third fret -third finger--- forth fret == forth finger-- it would be called a chromatic excerise 1234, 4321 with each finger in it's place walking up and down. Do that about 2000 times-- then next lesson.

you have the meter and can play on beat- so that's a great start. You could be a MONSTER on bass with the right instruction and the fire in your gut. You need to have that.

Wilson is my soccer ball. It was part of the cargo from a plane crash I was in that stranded me on a remote island for 4 years. Without Wilson I may not be here. Wilson floated off and away in the movie but in real life I still have him. Yes that's it. I still have him and now he is my partner in my detective service. It's me and Wilson. Much like Sherlock Holmes and Watson only not.

guess 2000 time wont last, go for:
1234-4321-1324-4231-1423-3241-2134-3241-1423-3241 and so on and on till all of your fingers do exactly what you want; don't count how many times you do it, rather count beats and measures and the string-sets you worn down...
and play along your fav cd's all day long (and the nights too)

+1 for The Chef - most helpful comments. And here's another vote for giving that little finger a good workout - invaluable! It'll feel very awkward to begin with, but in a few weeks you'll feel the liberation

Lots of good tips here, right form the basics: http://www.studybass.com/. And do learn the scales here: http://www.studybass.com/lessons/bass-scales/ - you don't need to learn all the weird ones like Balinese Pelog or Myxolidian with sharpened 4th, but you do need your major, natural minor, major and minor and suspended pentatonics. Especially the pentatonics!

But you've a really good natural sense of time and groove, which is so hard if not impossible to teach, so you're off to a great start. All the rest is just practice, and learning by heart. Boring at times, but opens the door to all the really fun stuff!

Keep up the good work!

Mike

There's more to Wilson than a mere soccer ball. Ask Steve Cropper

I think he's been hiding things from you. A good partner should learn not to do that, you know...

Josey,

Every bit of advice is good. I'm glad you're not shy about asking. Keep working hard and you'll succeed.
