I've been thinking and maybe the thing ( love affair) I have with Rotosound strings may come from the time when I started getting heavy into bass in the early to mid 70's. At that time as we all know there weren't a whole lot of choices in bass strings. Maybe 4 maybe 5 types available to buy. Fender bass strings were probubly the biggest seller back then.

Guys back then played Kustom 2 15 roll and tuck 200watt amps around here and when a guy I know put Rotos on his 69 P bass they made the bass cut thru when playing thru the Kustom amp. I really liked the sound and I learned how strings can make your bass sound better. He used to leave his bass at my other buddies house where I would go in the basement and commit the "worth a smacking" crime of playing his bass thru his rig. Oh yeah it was cool.

Within a year or so I got a Hayman 40 40 big fat heavy bass and put Rotos on it and it sounded great. I played it thru the Kustom for awhile and then the big day came. My Mom signed for a loan for me to get an Ampeg SVT and TWO 8 10 cabinets. So with the Hayman and the SVT and the Rotosound strings-- need I say more? Yes. It was HONKIN' gut sound ,ring gut tone, from wall to wall. I finally had enough sound to just hammer and keep up in volume with the guitar players I jammed with.

If I thought the Hayman sounded good with my new set up ---- well how did it sound when I bought my 74 P bass? ..... OMG...... I was jumpin' around Rockin' like a wildman.

So I have always used some sort of Ampeg amp or cab combo. I use a GK RB 800 (1998) and an Ampeg 4 10 hlf (1998) at gigs these days and I still go for that same sound that fills the room. It happens that with my set up the only string that gives me that familiar tone are the Rotosounds. Ampeg and Rotos are what I came up with.

Yeah I've tried Flippy Floppy, Golly Joe, and Cheese Sandwich bass strings and they don't do quite what I'm locked into. So for me Rotosound Bass round wound "66" or stainless or whatever - are the guys I use. I only pay about 1/2 of what I paid for them back in the 70's which was about 44 bucks!!! So at todays prices Rotosounds would cost around 75DOLLARS or so in comparrison. Back inna day I used to boil the strings for a few days more of use. I've spent enough on Rotos since 74 to own a share in the company. WOW that's 37 stinkin' years!!!!

I'm still partial to Rotosound round wounds, they're the ones I keep coming back to. My experience with their flats was bad but, I'm partial to round wounds. be on the lookout for pictures, my last part came in, they're all done!

They call this a Precision. I added a tone pot and a 22 cap to it. It has the quarter pound pickups. I also put the Jazz knobs on it which I liked. It was cool. I sold it though before I really got to play it. I can't tell you if I like these or not because of that. The tone pot was a good addition plus it's surf green-- oh yeah. This would be neat with a maple FB. Yes?

1998 P bass D-lux

This was a really good bass but I had a hard time seeing the dots on the dark stages so I ended up selling. I'd like to one with a maple neck and black dots.

Yeah- I didn't spend alot on it and I sold it for what I payed. I did like the way it felt when playing but that's about all I remember. I saw it on Craigslist not to long ago and the guy said he had a custom treble pot put in it. Yeah right. I emailed him but he didn't return it. I may have tried to trade back for it- I don't know.
