Thanks sabre. I will keep those in mind. Didn't know D'Addario made flats.

+1 on flats being kind to frets! It took me a while to learn to appreciate them, but now I wouldn't use anything else. Rounds are good for slapping, if you're into that kind of thing (I'm not!), but for everything else flats win every time for me.

There's a fascinating page on the Lakland site, http://www.lakland.com/audio.htm, where you can listen to clips of their various basses with flats and rounds. If anyone needs any convincing, there's the evidence right there on their P & J clones.

I have to admit, I'm pretty well addicted to the feel of flats, as well. Rounds just feel so wrong

good for slapping only? i my past bassist-life i did almost everything except slapping (i'm lefthanded, so my technique never went satisfactory) on rounds.
as you say, the site is very nicely made, but... some of the tunes do not sound very adequate to me, hardrock on flats ain't the thing. it misses that little wire on which i hang on.
it's good to be convinced but not everyone shares the same... i must have this extra-click, flats don't do that!

Beautifully put!

No, of course it's not the same for everyone, and it would be sad it it were. It's just my own feeling, and it's really specific to P-Basses, too.

Agreed not all the clips on the Lakland site are all that musically - but they are very good little snippets of the actual sound of the basses and their strings :)

I played it exclusively from age 16 - 46, and the 3rd fret has the rounds carved into it.... (I used to play REALLY hard and bend a lot.) :)

Ha! I've the same problem - one of the things that convinced me to give flats a go

Not so old a fart as I am, Sabre. I started this bass malarkey at school, and I'm 62 now

You well-seasoned gentlemen have fret gouges older than me. That is why I love this forum.

Try searching for a used one, they are easy to find and cost anywhere from 5-6 $$ hundred range(may be less, maybe more)yeah its used but for me I would prefer to own a nicely kept Caddy over a brand-new yugo,I have heard nothing but negs with this bass except it has a nice finish, other than that nothing good.

I'm 24, boss. I've owned a couple basses older'n myself. An ibanez desttroyer bass that was a little road weary. Those things are so beautifully balanced.

What's left of my memory seems to recall a kind of an Explorer-like bass, but with P/J pickups... Or am I rambling, as usual?

It was an 84. Two years to the month older than me. It had been modded with double J p/u's in both positions. It was ungodly loud, and really big, heavy and damn if it wasn't a joy to play. It had super low action with a thick bit of neck above the body that made slap/pop so damned easy. In its case it was near 9 feet tall but that swished explorer body made it balance like a olympic level gymnast. It just needed too much work to really get to where I wanted, and the aftermarket p/u's would have left too big of a hole if I wanted to move back to the PJ config.

String the bass thru the back of the guitar . Use Rotosound strings. Get all the girls. Very simple.

I've been around before electric bass guitars.
