If the price range is allowing you an American Standard. Go for it. There are a lot of guys on here who have them and love them. I've played a bunch and actually never played a bad one. Considering the great case you get with it, it's a good deal.

Don't get suckered in by the American Special or some of the Artist basses, the American Standard is the best bass for the money.

My advice to you would be, play as many different basses as you can. You'll be surprised how the same model can be so different. When you play the right one you'll know it

Good luck, post some pictures when you get it.

Thank you very much for your reply. Signature will not get for sure. For the American special, I think, maybe is as good as the standard ? And perhaps the difference in price is only for the case? Other than you telling me, and I read in other topics, i will probably go to the standard.

No, the American Special is a terrible bass! I mentioned the case that comes with the Standard because it is one of the best.

If you're asking me, buy the American Standard.

There is a problem! I'm thinking of ordering via the web. From another country. So if I do that, I will not be able to try it than others. There is so MUCH difference between the same U.S. standards; How can ????? :? :?

And one last question, there is a problem in the Precision Bass Alnico V Split Single-Coil Pickups ? I've heard some people say it does not sound very loud. Some other precisions you've played, had more noise than the new American standard ? Thanks again for your valuable advice :D And certainly, which I eventually bought, I will upload photos and my impressions :D

In a perfect world, every bit of good advice would be able to be used, unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world. I would not hesitate to buy an American Standard sight unseen. There may be a few other Fender basses i could say that about but none of lesser quality, and or price.

Best of luck.

+1 on oxfan's posts - the American Standard is one of the few basses I'd risk buying sight unseen. Can't go wrong, IMHO.

I love my old '70RI better than any other bass I've owned - but there's no way I'd have bought such an instrument without being able to try it first. But if it were lost tomorrow, I'd buy an American Standard to replace it by the quickest means possible - I'd have no qualms about ordering one of those online!

Yes, that would be essential! (Why, oh why, would they sell a P-Bass with roundwounds installed as default?) :P

They're also like a generic bass string. Not everyone goes for or likes anything but. I'm glad I have my choice strings on.

I know, I know. You're both right. I just never feel a P-Bass quite sounds like a P-Bass without flatwounds - or nylon tapewound

+1 on brothedave.com, his site has more information than you can imagine. You can e-mail him questions and he'll answer you. Should you not get a reply right away, be patient, he's a busy guy.

You're both absolutely right about Br Dave - the man's a goldmine!

I doubt the string-through question would bother me too much in practice. I'm so used to top-loading bridges that I'd probably not bother to experiment with the option even on an Am Std. Seems to be quite a point of discussion in itself - good thread here on TalkBass http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f16/string-thru-body-flatwounds-595531/. Ed Friedland (good man, that) has some interesting comments about La Bellas.

The brand thing is another whole deal in itself, as you say! I've used d'Addario Chromes or half-round since I can't remember when, but I thought I might try a set of Rotosounds again next time. Haven't had a set of those on for many many years - if I can remember that far back  they sounded good, and had a very nice feel to them.

I love my Rotosounds. Just swapped from rounds late last year. My fingers thank me thoroughly.
