I am looking to replace a bass and was looking at an Am Standard P in a local shop... seems very nicely built and sounds nice... my only concern is that we play some songs with a touch of funk and i usually play off my bridge pickup for these songs on my J or MIM Active Deluxe... will i be able to achieve the same sound with a Standard P or should i be looking at the Am Deluxe instead?

Am Deluxe P is awesome. I picked mine up about 3 weeks ago. Active electronics and a j pickup make it a beast entirely different than the standard p. Funk is very doable.

Flip to active, pan towards the j pickup. Active gives you bass, mid, and treble knobs. Turn up the mid and treb if you leave the p pickup on (which I do). Play over the j pickup. You're stoked.

The older american deluxes had a massive humbucker compared to the current models with the pj setup. They were all-active 22-fret abalone dot-inlaid basses without the bypass mini toggle switch.
