ok, so back on the main topic of this thread, about GC and it's wonders... i'm really lucky actually, the guitar center i go to all the time i've been in there so many times that i know several of the staff, and there all managers, and not just brand new floor people, so i've had quite a bit of luck with them, eric is a musician and has a little country style acoustic band, and i've heard his stuff, he's played for years and i trust his judgement on stuff, rick is the bass guy, and he plays bass, and is in a band, and he gigs, and he's played for 20 + years, so i trust his judgement on bass stuff, he's the one that sold me the acoustic B20, and sometimes when i go in there me and him jam. vince in accessories plays in a raggae band, and is lead and writes all his own stuff, and has been playing for 10 + years, theres a couple other dudes there that i know not real well but well enough for if i need something fast that i don't need advise for. theres this one guy who i know doesn't play and is just a salesperson, and if i need something on the sales floor i go to him, he's pretty cool :D

but i know for a fact that more than half of those guys that work there are total idiots, and know nothing, so i just steer clear, and thats probably why they put them in pro audio HAHA every once in a while there will be a new hire, and i LOVE grilling them with the craziest questions i can think of just to see there response and see if they pass my test. :D i don't usually guitar shop there, i'm usually shopping for accessories, so it's a little different i usually buy from craigslist, or build my own from parts.

there is a musicians superstore right up the street from GC and usually i go there too because theres a guy in there who i know pretty well and he's a guitar player in a band too. the thing about MS is that there people are full time based, hourly/commissioned and are all trained factory on how to do set ups and things, and the prices are actually a lot cheaper than GC I.E. american standard strat @ GC = $999.99 at MS = $749.99

and if GC doesn't have a part i need i go to MS and if MS doesn't have something i go over to GC, and this happens a lot.

I others if you are to insist on dealing with faceless Music store chains for whatever reasons I insist on building a good one on one relationship with if possible the manager of the bass section or lead salesman or just with someone there whom you feel is honest and informed in the area of your interest.
As a consumer and salesman I know both will profit from trying to deal with the same person everytime,it will make them more likely to give you a deal when you really need it because of all the other purchases you made from him before will make him see that you are and will remain loyal to him when making ANOTHER buy,I had people try to convince me if I "hooked them up" now they would give me ALL of there millions of dollars of buisness in the future, and untill today never saw them before and not since,"they went elsewhere" they shouted while trying to leave the store with 3 packs of strings.
There's ways to make the most out of any situation, remember they are commision and though they may be a great honest person:Your money needs to be left in his store in order to make a paycheck, information is your biggest ally flaunt it keep the "posers"at bay.
PEACE

The quality of GC staff seems to vary wildly from location to location...my local GC has the "poser parade", who seem to think it far more important to out play and impress each other than to even acknowledge a customer who's just walked in.
Guess where I DON'T shop anymore?

well i must agree, the GC that i described is the one i shop at mostly, and there used to be a guy like you described, but guess who doesn't work there anymore....

but the GC on the other side of denver is exactly how you describe it, but there is one dude there that was really helpful when i needed a nut for my bass and they were the only store in denver that had one..... thats a funny story... i go into the guitar center with my bass, looking for a nut, and i had already called the guy, and the cute door girl needed to take my serial number, so we were kind of flirting a little, and she goes "what are you here for" (thinking to myself people at GC should know what i'm talking about) as i'm holding the bass i say "i need a nut" she gets all blushed out and says "right now? i'm not off for a couple hours" and it took me a few seconds of confused looks from me to get it....i'm like "oooooooooooooooooooo boy, i meant a nut for my bass" the girl blushed more knowing she was in err, and with more confused looks from her i pointed at the empty nut slot on my neck and said "that" and she goes "ok" and i walked into the store..

The more experience I have with GC and the more stories, the less I want to go to them. I'm just glad I have all I need and should i decide to buy anythig else, there's the internet and the advice of the NICP.

see i noticed something when i started playing bass, there actually comes a point where the upgrading stops :D like, i got a new amp, it will work great, and i probably will never need to upgrade, once i get the pickups replaced with the SPB-3's i won't have to upgrade the bass anymore either. and there isn't any effects that you have to deal with, so the best thing about bass is it makes the trips to GC less and props to anything that does that.
