Okay, as of right now I don't currently own a bass. (Playing a 01 AMS Telecaster) Back in the late 70's I had a 78 Fender Precision. Lately, I was thinking of getting a standard P and upgrading it.

Remember back in the day all you had to worry about was what color and fretboard you wanted now there is so many choices.

But... Now I'm seriously thinking of bitting the bullet and going 62 reissue. Next choice American standard or American Special, runner up Highway One, lastly Mex Standard upgraded...I'm trying to find one as close to my 78 as possible. Back then I had a Fender Bassman 10. Recently I got my hands on a 73 Bassman 100 head....so Basically I'm trying to recreate my old rig. I know for the money I'm talking about I could find a 78 on ebay, but I'm weary of buying someone elses troubled guitar.

Any thoughts, insight on the above mentioned basses?

OHHHH.... I like it... I'm a maple fretboard man myself. I personally prefer the P-bass. But that's a awesome Jazz.

Bob, I just checked out your blog.. As a home recording guy myself, I was impressed with your studio set up. What is the program you're running with the Fender amp and stomp boxes on your laptop? (checked out some of your mp3s too :D. liked what I heard.)

Don't even consider an American Special, quite frankly, they suck. Go for the American Standard. They're great instruments, probably the best production bass out there, IMHO. On top of that you get a great case. Well worth the money.

You've heard from two guys that own them and I've played a lot, both precision and Jazz.

Good luck!
