It is either a cheap Squire bass or a knockoff. Either way I'm happy because I only paid $75 for it and it came with a gig bag.

I'm looking more for equipment advice, and not trying to bother people for the learn how to play stuff (but I will certainly take any advice).

Now the dumb questions,
1. I'm pretty sure I can use my guitar amp until I get a bass amp, but...?
2. Is the Fender Rumble 15 amp a decent practice/learning amp? (budget <$200, and need headphone jack)
3. What is a good website/book/etc for setup instructions and measurements? (I do my own guitar setups)
4. What string gauges are put in at the factory?
5. New tone/volume pot suggestions? (tone pot in the bass I bought is disconnected so I might as well replace it with a better one)
6. Anything else you think is important for a bass newbie to know?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I probably should have put this in the Squire bass area but there are just so few posts there.

1. yes, you can use guitar-amps... as long as the speaker isn't too small (10"-12" recommended)
2. yes, this amps fits very well. (maybe a size or two bigger for further action (rumble 75)
3. best you ask your questions here, we're enjoyed to help.
4. in general: Fender® USA Super Bass 7250ML, NPS, (.045, .065, .080, .100 Gauges)
5. maybe a tbx-tone-control?
6. practice, practice, practice -and get a circle of fifths and con it to the bone!!!
7. there's no dumb question, only dumb people!
8. you're welcome... :D

Just an add-on to what our colleague already mentioned above:

If you have a home stereo with a SUBWOOFER try jacking the guitar amp line out into the subwoofer line in CAREFULLY. Start with LOW line out and line in volume settings on both units until you can reach a proper subwoofer output level. You may be pleasantly surprised at the results - at least until you can get something like a Rumble 100.

Good luck.

Welcome to the Forum. You got a lot of good advice. The only thing I'll add is a recommendation.

Acoustic B20 is a nice amp, I've played through one and it was really decent for a small amp. Has all the bells and whistles you're looking for.

Good luck.

Forgot to mention, here's the place to go to find almost everything you need. Wait until you've got a lot of free time, you could spend hours there.

Wow, that didn't take long. Thanks. I have a stagg 60 watt amp with a 12" speaker so I will use that for now. Sounds like it is a good idea to add some money to the amp budget to get something will a little more umph.

I have been lurking in the background for awhile so I knew this was the right place to ask questions. I really appreciate the quick answers and the fact that I wasn't brushed off and told to do a search. I do searches on the site but it usually doesn't help much.

So what are the general measurements for a setup? Should the neck relief be the same as for a guitar? (0.004-0.008 inch with string fretted at 1st and 14th frets) How about the action? I'm assuming that should be higher than guitar. (on my guitars I have it at 3/64 inch on high E string and 4/64 on the low E string when fretted at 1st fret) What about a starting height for the pickup?

The intonation is off right now so I'd like to do the full setup soon to get that fixed. Funny how I notice intonation now when before I started to play guitar I couldn't tell when someone was singing a 1/2 step flat.

Ok, I found the set-up guide on the support page. I should be good for now.

Hey man, nothing about your questions is dumb. You understand that, though similar to guitars, basses have different considerations.

I own a rumble 15 and love the little demon. It actually makes a decent seat on which to practice. The controls are simple but useful. If you check musicians friend you can probably find a scratch and dent or a return. Also, I previously owned a marshall mb series. Great amps. The 4210 was lots of boom in a relatively small package. They have a 30 watt that is in your range. Again, keep an eye on the musiciansfriend clearance and scratch/dent. You'll find a hell of a set of deals.

Stay groovy and enjoy the thump.

Welcome to the forum. I've collected many different setup links on this page: http://brotherdave.com/add_maint.htm be sure to check the one by GARY WILLIS as it is VERY good.

You can actually damage a guitar amp speaker with lower bass notes, so be careful. It also won't sound as satisfying as a decent practice amp.

There are several alternatives to the practice amp, for example I practice through my computer using an emulator pedal and a mixer patched into the line input on the computer soundcard and monitor through headphones connected to the computer. Laptop computers often don't have a line input, but you can get a USB soundcard dongle device and do that with a laptop. Laptops in general have minimal soundcards unless you order one with the upgraded audio capability. There are also mixers with USB outputs, but some of them don't work yet with Windows 7 systems or even Vista, so be careful about that and make sure they are compatible.

The only DUMB question is the one unasked!
Happy thumping!

Are those USB dongle goblins on your site, BroDave? I've been digging a bit on that AWESOME repository, and haven't seen 'em. I'll give another look. I never! close that tab on my browser.
