Any Paul Simonon fans out there? On my way to work this morning the radio played London Calling. I haven't pulled out my Clash CDs in a long time. Haven't touched my ipod lately either which has a healthy dose of the Clash on it. Anyway if they were a new band now I may have ignored them but at 17 they were a big impact. I always loved the shot of Simonon trashing his precision on the London Calling cover. Not to mention the music inside.

I listen to WZLX almost all the time. I might wander if Carlson & MacKenzie talk too much. I think it was HJY Providence that played London Calling this morning or was it WBRU. My IPOD is still 75% ZLX compatible. I guess that late 70's British invasion gave me a few bands. The Clash & The Jam. I also have some Chilli Peppers on my ipod but most of it is The Who, Led Zep, Aerosmith, Stones, Clapton, etc.....Classic Rock

oh yes, i was much in clash in this time, smoking far east substances, squatting abandoned factories and other outrageous rude manner...
but time comes, time goes and other music/behavior/thoughts went important, only my love for good ol' blues is here to stay (just hanging around with taj mahal)

Hey dude, if not for the blues, there would be no Rock N' Roll or any of its derivatives. :D

All my favorite bands are based in the blues.
I guess it's universal. 8)

yeah, i know... of course it's not only blues i'm into, all blues-based stuff goes well for me too.

"universal"? yes for you and me and all our rock'n'roll-friends, our world is spinning around it.
but we're surrounded by plenty of spineless @.$.$. consuming "main-stream" without a sense of its content; just to blame... :x

for very far-out bass-sound and even more virtuosity get that one, swiss hardrock at its very best:
toad (band) tomorrow blue (one of my all-time favs!)

Most dont know it but he really was'nt a bass player before he joined the clah, all the positions were taken EXCEPT a bassist,he learned notes by putting stickers with the notes on the fret-board to help with getting familier to where the notes are,the guitarist taught him how to play everywhere or anytime helping him get around the fretboard and know what any why its being played, not bad..join a band with a instrument not knowing how to play it and learning while your touring and while your in a fancy smancy place to hold up while waiting to go on. :?:

Yeah, I know the story of how he was Mick Jones buddy but couldn't handle 6 strings so Jones got hiom to play bass. By the way Joe Strummer was the last to join the band. The CLASH was big for me in my teens. Paul Simonon was not a John Entwistle or John Paul Jones but The Clash was right for the time & Simonon taught or not held the bands groove together.

I heard from many sources that he did'nt know squat about the bass, the band needed a bassist and he was non-voluntering only choice,he was taught to play bass while on the road doing a tours(s),he had position markers on the bass side painted with Pink paint(almost 100% on the color but one never...)so he could worry about the actual notes of the song without being nervous about where they are on the bass,I think its a pretty slick way to learn on the fly,now he's a pretty well known name in the bass comunity and all that without ever playing bass untill he want out to tour, the band had just a few practices to tighten up and teach the bassist how to play,TALK ABOUT A LEARNING CURVE, I think its cool for his bass that he splintered to be shown in the Rock&Roll hall of fame, seeing how punk was'nt really acknowledged by the mainstream listeners so having his bass in a museum really speaks volumes about who and what he was and how his smashing of his bass became an Icon in the punk movement.

guess that any talented guitarist can quickly become a bassist too as long he checks the instruments function in the band.
a friend of mine asked me to play drums for a gig, despite i never really played before and had no drums to practise with only one week to prepare i did the job. (not too bad i guess, i still play with them...)
checking basic techniques and meditate on the needs of the band will help to get into making music with other than your "native" instrument.
rock'n'roll though!
