I have a Japanese P-Bass Lyte from somewhere in the nineties, with a natural Alder body.

I want to clean and polish the body since it has started to look dull and shows quite some wear from playing with a pick. Problem is, it's quite hard to find info online on how to treat a natural body.

Any advice out there?

is it plain wood or lacquered?
plain wood you got to wax once a mounth, for lacquered you take some mild soapwater...
(don't let it flow onto blank woodparts like neck-pocket, cavities or pegheads!!!),
a soft fabric and guitar-polish will let it shine bright again...
some lemon-oil will do the same on the fretboard, at least twice a year!
the pick-wear is something to keep, it won't go off anymore...

Naptha- Mineral Spirits is a good guitar cleaner. I don't use it on laquer though. You also have to wipe off the guitar with a clean rag after using the naptha. Great Stuff!!

I thought a "flare gun " caused Smoke on the Water?
Zappa just happened to be playing there.

Although I regret it now, back when I was 16, I burned and smashed a bass on stage...

not really, the flare gun-guy only started to heat up the event, the smoking water went later...

how did you get your bass burning, another naphtha-show? describe in detail... i'm a pyromaniac!

Rosewood fretboard, yes lemon oil is great. A little dab will do ya! HOWEVER, if it is a maple fretboard....just clean it. No oil. The oil will go through some of the clearcoat lacquers or poly finishes and cause problems.

Here's a good tutorial on fretboard care for maple, rosewood and ebony:
