I have a USA P Bass with one of the newer high mass bridges that allows for thru body or thru bridge stringing. I currently have it strung thru body with Rotosound SwingBass 45-105s and they fit and play perfectly.

I'm thinking of putting flatwounds on this bass (Fender set 9050ML 50-100) and wondered whether I'm best off stringing thru bridge, or whether I can just put them thru body as usual. I've used plenty of flatwounds on other basses that have strings thru bridge only, so I know the stiffer feel and tension of flatwounds. Just wondered whether anybody could advise from experience about stringing on this particular Fender bridge.

Cheers

Keith

I've used Fender flats (same model you're using) on both string through bridge and string through body basses. Through the bridge is as normal as you'd expect when it comes to flats, but through the body is a whole different story. I recently installed them on my '51RI. At first, it would seem that something might go wrong (such as the string breaking or the saddles lowering), but that was mostly me being afraid of what could happen (its a new bass). You'll hear a lot of clanking and other weird string sounds as you tune them up, but give them a bit and they will settle in with ease. So all in all, I had no reason to be worried and neither should you, though I did buy a spare set just in case... y'know?

Another piece of advice, if you ever wish to try a different brand, DO NOT try LaBella or Thomastik-Infled flats if you're aiming for through body stringing. They're not long enough to reach so you're best off going through the bridge with those two models.

Thanks Garf

I think what I might do is follow your example and buy a couple of sets of the Fender flatwounds to start with. Go with the thru body first and if that doesn't work out for any reason, I've got a fresh set I can just string thru bridge.

I've used the Fender flats on less expensive Mexican Fender P's and Jazzes that I previously owned. These all had standard string thru bridge only and the strings worked great on these, particularly the P Bass. So I know if I do end up going with string thru bridge that will be fine.

I just thought that because I have the option of string thru body on my USA P that I should go with that where possible.

Thanks for everyones comments so far!

Try it out and see if you like the results. I know some prefer flats through the bridge than the body, and vise versa. My '51RI has since welcomed the strings and they sound great. Let us know what you think if you do the same.

I dont like the tension on my Fender when I string the flats through the body, anytime you lengthen the strings they become more taunt, thus adding uneeded tension on the neck,I prefer to only use 40-100 gauge on my Fenders, especially if they are flats though I dont mind going thicker on my p-bass its neck has more rigidity, but my jazz bass cries like a baby when the gauge is too thick,if i ever flats on my jazz-bass thru the bridge I would be able to go deer hunting with the bow I'll get. :?

Hs anyone ever used the nylon roundwound strings, they are a reg string type but are finished off with a thin nylon like thread wrapping, they feel a little tighter than a typical nylon coated string and give a more compressed sound.
They are'nt usually stocked at most music stores but some of the smaller boutique/vintage/highend shops sometimes have them along with the internet sites which are usually cheaper seeing how they are usually pricey compaired to some brands.
