Do you mean use the lower 4 strings from a 5 string set on your Precision?
And tune it to BEAD?

Sure go for it. Its the higher strings that have the higher tension, so the neck should be able to take it.

You may have to modify or change the nut on the bass to accomodate the thicker strings.

During his tenure with Audioslave, Tim Commerford did the same. The nut would have to be modified slightly (filing to accommodate the heavier gauge strings). So rock out!!

Most nuts are kinda(not always, some fall right out) hard to get out, after being in awhile they tend to want to stay even if not glued, the swelling of the neck could hold it down along w/lite glue too,I would'nt think of a nut as something to be changed back and forth between diff tunings while experamenting diff gauge sizes or tunings
You asking this question(no disrespect or judging here)tells me you are'nt familiar with DYI bass work,a nut is'nt like changing a string or tuner, they easily break and must be slotted to correctly maintain the center of the string distance and could also take with it a piece of your fret-board.
If you must get 2 brass nuts made(for your bass silly boy...)one for each of your string gauge prefernces, they dont break if you want to go back and forth between the two allowing just string tension to hold the nut in place, should cost less than 100.00$ to get both nuts made and not have to worry about fret-board damage.

no puzzling man, i do all my small work like intonation, pup- and neck-settings and part-exchange on my own, not the first nut i'm confecting and fixing... and i'm perfectly equipped for.

to precise my own question:

i'd rather want to know about the physical properties like wood-mass and pup-senstivity with the low b-string; i play a 18 year old warwick streamer 5 with a very thunderous and bouncing sound allover the neck. so my concern is more on that than filing nuts and so on...

I popped off a nut once and a piece of the rosewood fret board came with it. It stuck right to the nut. I was a rank novice (still am) and I screwed up and messed up the fretboard. Good thing is was not an expensive guitar. You live and learn.

i had a small repair shop in the 80s - no big hassle to replace a nut; a small woodblock and a little hammer, some soft strokes from both sides to loosen the nut and a 5mm chisel to lift it out. the whole secret unveiled...

I deserved it. I thought I did it right. I traced around it with an exacto. I used the wood and tapping too. I just sucked at it I guess.

That's the way I roll. And it was a beater I did it to. I glued the piece back into the fretboard-- it ran paralell to the grain and looks okay. I ended up making 4 nuts for it during my learning process. Finally got it and installed it and was all proud of myself. I'd go back and look at it every 20 minutes like one does. HA!
So --- I used cheapo nuts of course. And of course the nut broke next to the low E troff shortly after I did the set up and restrung it. Still haven't redone it. The band I'm in takes all my time and I'm stickin' to that story no matter what!! :D :D

Dudes! It's all most a miracle to get a band going for any number of reasons-- unreliable guys- burn outs- people with all kinds of issues, - wifes--- kids that get caught with weed and the guitar player has to deal with that-- guys who won't practice- guys who suck who think they are great- manipulators-- agendas- EGOS-- yes men-- liars --- wimps-- junk equiptment-- somebodies Mom--- guys who play that only use it for an excuse to drink---- other bands that ruin it for everybody-- Sterling Ball (just threw that in there for the heck of it)-- no place to practice-- can't practice at the drummers house because you might make the stair carpet dirty-- on and on and on.

It took the band I'm in 12 years to get to where we could go play out.

You are lucky. So am I. I don't take anything for granted. On average the bands I've been in- I, at the most would last a year or the bands would split up in a year. This is starting in the early 70's. I had a very long run of disappointment with bands but I still kept going. Some of it was me some of it was them. Nothing ever really clicked. Most of the time the guys just drove me nuts with stupid stuff. One guy almost ran over my foot doing a burn out in the grass while I'm standing talking to him in his truck. Stuff like that all the time. I could go on for days about dumb stuff that ruins bands. Just being in this town was a negative thing. So what did I do? I learned how to drive the big rigs and gave up bands for awhile.

Finally after everyone got older and had nothing to prove to anyone- things settled down. It still took over 10 years for our little Tuesday night Jam band to become a gigging band. Now it's a whole different ball game.

Being in my home town has actually helped. I've known the guitar player since 66, the drummer since 68, the singer from 73 or so. The keyboard player is a Chicago gangster wanna' be so nobody really knows him.

We're all at the same level in an acumulative kind of way. It clicks. It's the best band I've ever been in by far. I'm thankfull and very luckey and don't take it for granted. We all work hard to stay and work together.
