So the bass he has with it's stock neck doesn't appeal to the player. Then the player buys an aftermarket liscenced neck (or not) and he puts it on the bass after drilling and nutting and other preperations- tuners, ferrules, etc.. He buys the new strings and installs them. He intonates and sets all the parts just right. He plugs it in ......he plays the strings.... it goes "thud... thud.... blap...blamp........ it sounds like poo. It gives you a kind of sinking feeling.

"The Thud Factor"-- sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone and maybe move on. The thing is- noone can see the future. That can be part of the fun in modding a bass.

"The Money Factor" is another one.

After I got my '51 RI, I found the banana yellow annoying, and I briefly contemplated buying a replacement body finished in natural ash, but a little investigation revealed that it would be impractical.

The '51 RI and Sting, along with the Telecaster Bass, have square neck pockets rather than the rounded ones on split-coil Precisions. Warmoth, at least, does not make bodies to fit or necks with the squared end. If you buy a Warmoth neck, the fingerboard radius and peghead shape are correct, but the neck won't fit a Tele body.

And the color? I got used to it. I played the '51 last night and never thought about the finish. Who knows? Maybe I'll eventually get to like fiesta red.

Those are some cool looking basses-- I have a tan 50's classic see thru-- that's what that red one is isn't it? Fiesta red is good- I would have rather had that color than the tan I got-- but it was a trade and that's what the guy brought so I went for it.
