Okay the string retainer retains the strings. P basses have always had them. Someone else will give you the long answer. Enjoy your Thunder machine mang.

Did you ever notice how say a Gibson's headstock is angled back, and Fenders are not...

The string tree / retainer compensates for that by keeping the sting against the nut properly....

BDave will be by soon to explain that more elegantly.
(Including the degrees of angle.)

nice to answer me but since i'm longtime playing and my own technician, i know the facts about headstock-angles. i owned a couple of precis during the years (deep regrets having sold a marvelous 3tsb '62 in mid 70s.
still the question remains, this 3rd stringholder is not really making sense, this minimal bending of the string and its pressure on the nut will not affect the sound...

LowBlow is talking about the EXTRA retainer on the THIRD string, the "A" string. Most Fender 4 string basses have one retainer or "string tree" that holds down the "D" and "G" string. Fender has used extra string retainers on certain of their higher end USA artist basses like the Victor Bailey models, but those retainers are more traditional trees and are not exactly like this one.

This model has features borrowed from EVERY single decade of Fender Precisions if you look around and know your P-Bass 101. In addition you'll find at least two all new features to carry the Fender P-Bass into the next decade. Two notable new features for the next decade are Fender's new High Mass Vintage bridge (convertible for topload or body through stringing) which has also replaced the USA Deluxe Bass Bridge on the current production Deluxe models & the all new "A" string retainer which you might think is there so that the the "A" string winds perfectly on the tapered posts of the reverse tuners when these 50's style tuners are installed on the second generation style neck. That's possibly part of why it is there. I also think because of the post taper, you could also possibly pluck the string right out of the nut slot during very hard finger style play without it being there. I say that because I actually did that on a 68 Precision with tuners similar to those more than once when it was loaded with some real floppy nylon coated strings! Lots more people use lower tension strings these days than back then. So this extra retainer will prevent that problem when using very low tension strings. This "A" string retainer design is a feature we just might see more of on other future models.

cheers brotherdave,
a valuable explanation... but tearing the string out of the nut demands brute force imo; i have a quite heavy finger-picking in my playing but i never popped out a string of the nut using .045-.105 gauge in my preci days. (actually using .050-.130)
ok, i agree, i haven't played precis for years now, in the early '90s fender had no very useful 5th string, too thin in sound, too big in string-spacing and unbalanced with the long in a row-headstock.
...will the sound and playability decrease if i take this kinda strange part off?
i gonna try it out as soon as i have it and leave a note about.
