Pics might help us. However, P-bass pickups are screwed directly into the body. It wouldn't be too hard to unscrew them and relocate to the correct locations.

Do you mean he installed the cover off center or the pickup itself?

Are you talking about the cover?

Unless you have serious OCD, I am having a real hard time seeing any discrepancies.

Looks as if the bridge cover is lower on one, outside of that, they're close. The only "standard" I know of is, for a thumbrest, they send a template with them.

The pickguard had a hole pre-drilled for the pickup cover too I thought.

You would think they had a template at Fullerton for the bridge cover positioning, but I do not know that for sure. I imagine it is possible some of them were "freelanced" or "eyeballed."

Also even the spot on correct position could have changed model year to model year. I also know there was a change in the P-Bass pickup cover itself early in the CBS era.

I really think any change in the position of the bridge cover was more related to changes in body shaping than anything else. Fender Fullerton was very hung up on SPECS. They would have had a template for that year's model. If it looked FUNKY at final assembly it would have been sent back. EVEN in the FINAL days those guys got VERY anal retentive. ONCE I made the mistake of NOT believing that. I was dragged out onto Fender Forum Boulevard and had my Carolina Corn Fed booty kicked bloody by several Latter Day Fullerton quality control people. The specs were THE SPECS. I now just can't believe there would be more than 1 or 2 MM variance in the bridge screw holes during any one model year or these Eagle Scouts at Final Assembly Inspection would have sent it back.

Those guys, even near the end of things at Fullerton, were right on with the specs. BECAUSE that was all they had left. Apparently things were slow at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, so a bunch of CAL TECH PHD's were overseeing specs at Fullerton. I have seen some crazy crap called ORIGINAL FULLERTON 1983/84. It obviously was NOT. Those Spec-Crazed Gear Heads I've talked to would swear on a stack of Mormon bibles at risk of having to marry Three-Dozen 16 yr old virgins and keep each one happy for the next 30 years if wrong, all said that they would have had NO part of the slightest deviation from "THE SPECS." Like I said I've seem some crazy wild stuff claimed to be late stage Fullerton, BUT I am MORE sure now than ever that NONE of it was, and I was actually looking at spare parts made into a Parts Bass. Those guys were golden until THE BITTER END. I have their personal word on it. You have to think of those guys like the dance band on the Titanic. They knew they'd had something special. It wasn't THEIR fault it was dying, so they cracked down on the least little thing. SOOOO, up until the last. I MEAN THE VERY LAST, it was 100% the way it should have been. If the bridge cover or pickup cover moved it was specified to move. So position it YEAR CORRECT for the year of your instrument. You can't go wrong that way.

Unless your a complete neurotic(which I am)LEARN to do all your own mods,I went from playing drums for 20 years to buying a bass and figuring things out,I now do set-ups,neck-re-placement and even building basses from pre fabbed parts but I custom fit the neck and many other not just screw a screw in type building, because I wanted to be sure that my bass even just a Japanese copy(before they were as sought after as the real deal)was modified with the same attention to detail I expected(like cover placement, action, nut height ETC...)I dont care how good a repairman is they will never have the same initiative to be perfect as the owner of the bass does(in most cases, some people have basses just because they can, and dont care about every little detail)I looked at like 100 pics of old basses before I decided where to mount anything(b/cover,pickgaurd,thumbrest you name it)with the bridge cover I set it in push it all the way up till it touches the bridge, back it off a c/hair,center it,dab a black marker where the wholes should be,re-check it,start the screwsholes w/a drillbit just enuff the break the surface and allow for a screw to be set in,start the screws enuff to be firmly standing, start to tighten them back and forth from one bridge screw to the other allowing a little slack allowing the cover the abilty to be re-centered a few X's before being secured tightly to the body.
LONG STORY SHORT  learn to fix/mod your own bass, not only is it cheaper, gives you a sense of accomplishment and lastely FUN!
