Are the new fender ashtrays that come with the 62 precision bass avri "vintage correct"? I mean, did fender changed how does it look over the years? I don't know why, but the older ones seems to be more squared for me, also, they seem to have a smaller space between the cover and the pickup.

Thanks.

I'm gonna take a wild guess here and say that the current ones made are the same you find in AV basses. I'm not sure if the covers have changed over time (since the 60s) but that's just me.

That's exactly what I wanna know. I really wanna know if they changed it since the 60s.
The bridge cover looks pretty much the same though.

To answer your question:
Yes, the pickup chrome cover or ashtray, as you refer to it, has changed.

Before 1977, it was squared off as you said. The cover had two vertical walls the rose up and then the cover arched over the pickup. This is the cover that was on all of the true vintage Precision basses (before '77). Jamerson's Funk Machine, Brian Wilson's white Precision from 1961, Duck Dunn's '58; all had this original design "Ashtray"

The newer (post 1977) design is a smooth arch that starts at the pickguard on either side of the pickup.

It is very easy to see the difference and unfortunately, all reissued Vintage, Reliced and custom shop basses are equipped with the newer design pickup ashtray.
I don't think that you can buy an original design from Fender. I don't know of any after-market company bothering to remake this original design ashtray and sell it as a replacement.

Maybe that's a good thing, because us original Precision owners want to have something to hold on to that makes our basses unique. LOL

take care,

Just wondering, it only applies the pickup cover, right?
The bridge cover seems pretty much the same for me.

Correct- The only cover that changed in shape was the pickup cover. The bridge cover is still the same shape, although the mute that was inside of the bridge cover on the original Fender's of the 50's,60's and early 70's is no longer supplied with the cover.

No big problem is presented by the missing bridge ashtray mute.

If you want to install a mute like the originals the original style mute foam is still sold as window weather-stripping at numerous Home supply stores.

Also is it just me or is the plating different? I recall that the chrome plating on the original covers when new looked different from the plating on the covers of today. The ones today are more silver looking where the original ones had more of a bluish tinge to the chrome.

Is the color of the chrome plating different? I don't know.

It certainly could be, but I don't know enough about the chrome plating process to comment.

I guess if you put an old setof covers next to a new set you may see a difference but I don't know how you can say that all plating was a certain color for any given era of Fender Bass without having some more in depth background info on where the plating was done and by who.

I don't know any of that stuff.
