Well, it's a very good bass, best in it's price range in my opinion. It's a great bass to use as a base for mods and if you don't want to mod it, it's still a great bass. Can't go wrong really.

Both of my P's started out as plain Standards. A few upgrades and both are dream basses. It is hard to go wrong. For the money Ensenada is where it's at.

Since you're going with an MIM model, you might consider the Deluxe Active P Bass Special. It's going to be just a little more money, but it's got a Jazz Bass neck, which I think is more comfortable overall. If I could get a JBass neck on an American Deluxe P-Bass body, I'd do it in a heartbeat!!

To be honest, if you want the best P bass bang for your buck, the MIM Classic 50's P bass is IMO, the best sounding and playing stock Fender P produced today besides an AVS57RI, and a CS 59' P. At half and a third of the price respectively you honestly can't go wrong. Has great sounding pups, the same hardware as the AVS 57RI, and a couple of cool color choices. I've played 5 in shops locally and everyone was a player. Needed absolutely, nothing. Very 50's P tone vibe. To really step it up, get one and string her up with a set of the Fender 7150 Pure Nickel Rounds in Medium gauge. I bet the tone would be legend.

I just got a killer deal on the 'bay on the MIM 60th Anniv. P, otherwise I would have gotten a Classic 50's. I hope they keep them around atleast another year...I really want one.

My recommendation if you've got the scratch...

I would also go for the Classic 50's Precision, it has such a good sound. I have not found better value for money!

What upgrades did you implement?

One has a set of SD Antiquity pup with the raised a's, and a Fender Vintage Bridge. Niether mod was necessary. I just wanted that tone, and as I use Flatwounds on that bass I like the feel of the vintage bridge better with those strings. The stock bridge worked fine and intonated well, it was just a personal preference. That bass also got the neck off my old Big Block P as I like the profile of that neck better and it had a much darker tone.

My other P I dropped in a set of SD 1/4lbs. and a BAII bridge (along with adding the chrome pup cover and tugbar for some flash). Again, the stock bridge worked just fine, but I want this bass for the rock band I'm in and I wanted it to be the most aggressive P tone you'll ever hear. I topped it off with a set of DM Skullbuster strings and it sounds amazing. It'll knock you right outta your socks.

The only upgrade I would always probably make on a Standard P bass is a pup upgrade. The stock ones sound fine, very 70's P...but they seem to have a tad bit lower output then more premium pups. A Standard P Bass with a high quality pup upgrade is still less expensive then any of the other models, and will last you a very long time. I have 3 P basses now, the two mentioned above and a 60th Anniv. P (MIM). That bass needs nothing other then a different color pickguard as it already has the American Series Pups in it. I play MIM P's by choice, for the past few years they've trounced every AS P I've tried in the tone department.

My vote goes to the Classic 50's P, though to who evers in the market. The pups are fantastic, the hardware is that of the 57 RI and every one I've played has been amazing. As far as I'm concerned, for the money it's the best instrument Fender produces today. Even without money being a concern the only P basses I would rate higher are the AVS 57 and 62 RI's and the CS 59 P.

Good luck in your search.

I have a 2001 Standard P, it was my main player until I got my '50s Classic P (been giving my '75 P a long deserved rest!).
Stock pups, added the pickguard and other eye-candy.
I really do love the thin neck and low action on this bass.

This is my '59 Wanna-Be bass.

'Bought a Standard P (natural / rosewood / tortiseshell a few weeks ago and it's a positively lovely instrument, 'been out on 3 church band gigs to date.

ONLY agro with it is the turd-like volume pot. EVERYTHING seems to happen between "8 1/2" and "10" and there is zip-nada-no sound at lower settings, tried through 3 different amps.

Anyone else have this and if it's a Fender defect, how to get righted?

First, if it's new, take it back to the dealer. If not, a squirt of pot cleaner might do the trick. After that, install a new 250k audio taper pot.

I agree try the pot cleaner first.

As to the original topic the p bass is an amazing bass, looks and plays beautifuly. Can't go wrong with a standard or any other for that matter.
