Hi I am just a beginner and picked up a used fender p bass. It had one heck of a hum to it so I opened 'er up and found two broken solder connections. That took all of 5 mins. to fix. I plugged it in with all the guts still exposed and no more hum. Great! While buttoning everything up I noticed on the back of the pick guard around where the tone, volume knobs and output jack are mounted is a foil type material. It is slightly damaged around the output jack. After it was back together a small hum had returned. What is this foil for and could the damaged area be the source of my hum?

Welcome.

Even with a humbucking pickup such as yours, a small hum is in fact, normal and expected. The foil acts as a shield for your pots and jack to keep the hum down. And FWIW, during the 70s, this foil was also used to ground these components instead of running a negative wire among them. As you can see, the tooth washers of the components would chew right threw the foil and break the negative connections, causing all sorts of buzz and hum.

I figured it had something to do with grounding but if that was 30-40 years ago, why is it still put there?

Because it still serves to partially block electromagnetic interference from external sources such as florescent light transformers, stray radio signals, etc, etc.

My advice: Sell the bass and buy one that doesn't hum. Problem solved.

Going to see my little darlings tomorrow, taking a Vinnie Pie.

On today's episode of, "As The Tuner Turns", gbass is still down in the well, Sabre is hearing voices, Pbassbob is hungry for a salad and Rez is volunteering at a animal shelter. Tune in to hear Zod  ask the question,"Does anyone really wonder why I'm keeping such a low profile?"
