I am considering swapping in either a SPB-1 or 3 into my P-Bass, Rebecca. She's a P-Bass Standard, '08. Wondering what the big difference in them is and how much skill this would take for me to do on my own. I know the Steve Harris bass has come with both styles, and I have really enjoyed his tone above most others (big NWOBHM fan). Any help is appreciated.

Depends on what you're looking for. I use SPB-3's on my own P-Bass and its gives you a more fuller response and more output that any pickup I've used. It's the ideal pickup for driving rock tones or metal.

Harris' current bass uses SPB-1, which I myself plan on putting into a bass I'm building from scratch. Its got that vintage tone that differs it from today's modern bass tones.

Its more of what you're looking for. Personally I'd say give the SPB-1's a shot if you want the definite Harris tone.

Yeah, not a big fan of modern bass tone. Mostly seems like sonic mud alot of times. Thanks for the clarification, man. Now to research the actual act of replacing those things. God help me.

Best of luck, bud. If you do find anything, do share. I'd like to find a way of installing them myself without paying an expert for it, haha.

Color is key young one.Once you learn the art of the coloring all else is simple.
Or you could cheat on the test and just use the diagram

I have experience with both. The SPB-1 is wound to vintage specs, and does the job perfectly. Very smooth, classic tone, vintage output.

The SPB-3 is the Quarter Pounder and has a much hotter output, and a scooped mid-range with very present low and highs. Very Mike Dirnt when played with a pick.

However, the QP is a very versatile pup, roll the tone knob off a little, and it has a great tone played with fingers. For me, I like the feel of the QP better, it is very responsive under the fingers. For live work, it sits in the mix great.

Having said that, I settled on a DiMazrio Model P. A little more emphasis in the mids, less aggressive highs.

HTH,

-Tim

I just got a SPB-3 in my Precision, Lawdaddy said it all so I won't repeat it. I was paranoid about doing it so I found a good tech. I'm completely satisfied with it.

Got to tell you though, I went through months of trying to decide what to do. I'm really convinced bass players are nuts!

Get a soldering iron, then you can really go crazy! Nice caps, etc...

There's a reason the QP is one of the best selling upgrades of all time.
