Welcome to the forum, Dan!

Starting with your amp, it's common for solid state bass amps to "thump" when turning on and off...you should find the loudness of the "thump" follows the volume setting on the amp.

As to the tuning peg "wobble" and the knob not "feeling right", it's difficult to try and offer suggestions for tactile (feel based) problems, without a hands on examination.

If you have access to either a more experienced bass player or, better still, a good guitar tech in your area, having them look at the bass would give you the best answers.

Where you just got the bass, it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring it to a good tech for new strings and a setup...he'd have a look at, and probably straighten out quickly, both the tuners and the knob during the course of the setup, and you'd wind up with a perfectly playing bass as a result. Techs set their own prices, but on average, a setup should set you back 50 or less, plus the new strings...a moderate investment that'll make you love playing your new bass all the more!

Hope this helps!

The amp thump is totally normal. You may also notice a small thump when plugging a powered-down amp into a cab. This has to do with the power that's still stored within the amp.

As for your tuners, if it's wobbly at the headstock, try tightening the screws that attach it. If it's the key, there's a screw to tighten it, as well.

The volume knob may have been overtightened. They become loose much more often than the tone knobs, because people utilize them more. I'm sure it's fine and can be adjusted to a comfortable tension, but worst case: you'd have to replace the volume pot.

I'm all about a good set-up, but as a player, you should also learn some basic maintenance on your instrument. It'll be useful in the future, and it will help you understand your bass more.
