I'm happy to be a Jazz Bass player. The only other bass I've owned was a 1979 Ric 4001, which was great for some things but not enough. Lately I've been considering picking up a Precision just to have a different bass around. Sure, I've played on some in stores or at people's houses, but I've never used one in practice, live, or recording, so I have no idea how one would be in functional settings for me.

Why should I even want a P-Bass? What things should I look for in the various P's made over the years? Were some years notoriously better or worse? Are there some often overlooked jems like late-80s Japanese are for guitars? Anything else I should know? Thank you!

Go and try some different P-Bass neck profile at your local music store to find out what neck feels the best for you. That way you can at least figure out if you want a A or B or C profile neck!

Try and play it through the same TYPE rig that you have in order to better judge the sound. Maybe bring it home to try it through your rig. Ultimately, giging with it would be your best way to see if you really like the sound.

Ask yourself if you prefer a maple or rosewood fretboard. (57 or 62)

Personaly, I would highly recomend the early Japanese basses as they where very close to the original specs and some had USA PUs and electronics.

Once you play it live, you'll know what songs it sounds best with for you and the music you play, and wheter it fits you or not.

Finaly, I resisted getting a P-Bass for years, and now that I have one, I just can't put it down! I would still recomend having a J and a P for sound versatility, but I would definitly recomend getting a P-Bass. You won't regret it!

Good Luck
