New guy to this forum, but been lurking for a long time so I thought I'd finally sign up. P-Bass user of only 3, almost 4 years, so I figured this would be the ideal place to start posting.

A question I've always wondered: What are your preferences when it comes down to necks? As in... do you like them to be the smaller, semi-Jazz Bass type necks or the more chunkier necks? What about finishes?

Better yet, why do you prefer it in that way?

Thanks pbassbob!

My case is very similar. I too owned a Jazz Bass but ended up selling it a year or so back cause I personally didn't have much use for it in what I do, but that doesn't say that it wasn't a great instrument.

Personally, I find the P-Bass neck, particular the chunkier thick C or U shaped ones (such as the 51RI neck) very comfortable, even though I do have small hands, haha. Maple is my preference when it comes to fingerboards as well, two of my 3 babies have maple boards.

Haha, that's a nice array of weapons you got there. I did the same, by having one rosewood neck to slightly vary the tone and sound capabilities. Gotta thank the pickup on each instrument for that as well. :P

I can play the P, but with my smaller size hands I'd rather play the Jazz. Ease of playing the Jazz made me lazy to stretch on the P ;) I used to play 5er so I guess it doesn't matter too much for me, I just prefer the smaller J neck. For the finish, I like Midnight Wine, Candy Cola, 3 color sunburst, O White, and of course the natural.

Good choice of colors there, PJB. The Jazz neck is comfy, but I guess it will always be down to personal preference, haha.

When it comes to finishes for me, there's Candy Apple Red, 2-Tone Sunburst, Arctic White and Honey Blonde. This is just for now, I'm pretty sure I'll find a new finish to add as time goes by.

If I get a new bass it'll either be the Hwy 1 PBass in Honey Blonde or the '70s Jazz Bass in 3 Color Sunburst. I've been in a old school kick lately.

Good man. Love the old school sounding stuff. I recently acquired a brand new 51RI in 2TS shortly after it was discontinued. Was fortunate really. Sounds and feels great. Had my eyes on a 59 CS but yeah, can't afford one at this time.

I considered the Highway 1 P before, but I wasn't sure cos I'm not too familiar with that the Nitro finish adds to the mix.

I like the Honey Blonde finish a lot. I like the Hwy 1 too, best bargain out there I think.

Yeah, I'd be happy with the Honey Blonde and rosewood P :) As a matter of fact, the General has one like that.

I'd like to have the '70s Jazz Bass in 3 Color Sunburst, the Hwy 1 Pbass in Honey Blonde 8)

I am extremely biased towards the new American Standard jazz necks. I have one and I love it. Maple fretboard with a gloss finish, satin on the rear. It feels so smooth and silky that i think that i can play better.
But, with my big hands, a P-bass neck fits me alot better. I have yet to see as nice of a neck on a maple p(in the stores only) as I have on my jazz.
Here's another chance to post it.
