The Tech 21 was a real bad GAS attack, all I knew was, I WANTED IT! Nothing else mattered, never played with one, never thought to see if there were other models. All I knew was John and Geddy had them.

Never once regretted it.

Check your e-mails for something special.

Got to PM Rez.

Mex models are not as good as American made,if they were they would be the same price,as a guitar tech I will say that the guitars Do tend to be closer in quality than the basses, the necks have much more tension so the basses are'nt as sturdy as the guitars are.they use cheaper wood, lower quality electronics and cheaper hardware,Why would they be just as good ?

I have a 2000 MIM that I acquired recently that is as good if not better than most Americans I've played...

Production axxes are subject to how a particular employee was feeling that day, the quality of the body or neck blank, and other mystical forces.

I have a Precision and a Jazz, I'm happy with both of them. I swapped out the pickups on the Precision for SPB-3's. That's all I'll do.

There's good and bad in all lines, there are good MIM basses.

You want to see bad, go play six American Specials.

Can possibly be that the body was usuable for either the p-bass standard or the now discontined Fender precision Special, the ones before all the bells and whistles, just the plain ol p-bass bridge p-up,the hotter jazz p-up in the bridge and a tone knob, the Mex standard had the same p-bass body MINUS the extra jazz route.
There are/were diffent sized p-bass bodies, some looked a tad sleeker(thinner in the middle)while some seemed a bit more "thick/er" in the middle, the P-bass special was a design to obtain the smaller p-bass body with the thinner jazz neck thus making a more "lead" style bass as opposed the the plump&round sometimes oooh..sooo...muddy ....OOOPS sorry...got ahead of myself  of the p-bass,the jazz bas was known for its sometimes super heavyweight body(I should know, mine is a girlscout cookie away from a hefty 13Lbs,but weight means tone...).
This was told as a "POSSIBILITY"coming from a Fender warrenty repairman I apprenticed with years back,Fender did many bizarre things with parts both wooden and metallic, there's tons of basses from the 80's that had parts that were found on late 70's models, they cut corners alot when they were sinking thus all the crappy 77-81ish basses and guitars alike, they used up any and all parts they had laying around before they dug into the new batches, they did some foul deeds and only the Japanese line saved them from going belly up allowing Fender to rebuild the empire back to its original glory on the back of their "Vintage re-issue" line, even going as far as using basses made Japan to be fitted with Made in U.S.A. decals and logo's,its in the books and on the web for anyone to view.
I had a 83 Squier p-bass,I was able to interchange the neck with any American made bass, the pickgaurd matched up every screw hole perfectly along with any other part, now here's the kicker,I had a 78 Memphis Japanese made p-bass,the neck was an EXACT fit to both the Squier and American bodies, the pickgaurd and other parts were too,If I had put on a Fender decal it would be impossible to distinguish the Memphis neck from the Squier and American, size fit and finish the same to a T. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
