well then somebody like me comes along and says that they have a cheapo 200 dollar bass made from lord knows what that just sounds great like a hammer from on high. I puzzles me. I firmly believe that there is a "roll the dice" factor. I also believe a person can convince themselves that since they spent so much money on the perfect bass with all the exotic wood and parts that they think it's the killer sounding axe- even though it's not killer. I also think one mans medicine is anothers poison. So what IS IT that I'm saying?
I'm cornfused.

I think what you're saing, is, you are happy with what you've got. I'm sure it's all you want. The true test will be when you start wanting to collect basses. :D

You have the first stages of G.A.S. and won't accept it. You're in denial, I checked with an expert.

You never know really-- I had 4 or 5 Teles that I got frustrated with and decided to build my own- I spent 1100 on it all together with extra parts I didn't use-- Guess what? The thing sings! Sorry no offense to anyone I love Fenders - but my Flamecaster really does sound like what I was wanting from a Tele. I'm totally happy with it and could never sell it. It's too sweet. It is the best turnout of the 6 or 7 guitars I've built as far as getting what I was looking for. So that's over about 5000 to get one axe I am extreamly happy with. If you can afford it then go for it---- I could build another one. I may - you never know.

Honestly SV, most of it, is that the one you built, is 'yours'. I'm no way saying I doubt Sabre here, but you put the time and effort into it...the other Teles are mass produced. Good quality mass produced items, as opposed to the one off custom you've built right :)

I built my Tele just like a Fender. Except it has a "V" maple neck and an Ash body with a thin flame maple top. I put Antiquities in it. Other than that it's not all that special. It just has a different sound than the Teles I had before it. Someone would probubly like the Teles I had before my Flametop. I sold them though and kept the one I built. It sounds different and better to me. I'm just saying I wish I would have been that lucky with my other builds. The basses I built turned out to be duds. They did not sound better than a real Fender bass for whatever reason. So out of 7 guitars I built only 1 kicks butt. IMO

When I think about it - it's a roll of the dice with any Fenders. Some just sound better than others-- I've sold alot of Fender basses that didn't compare to the ones I have that kick . If you look at the list below the ones (basses) that really stand out are : 74 P, 72 J, 50's Classic P, Roadworn P, 01 Jazz. They just sound even all over the neck. The open stings and fretted notes all are prominent and the same volume. The harmonics ring out very well. They are not too heavy and not real light. They stay in tune well - they are alder, poplar (74), and Ash(72). The 74 Poplar really honks. I don't know if that's from age or from the poplar. The 72 Ash is real smooth and even sounding, The other two P's sound like vintage P basses (pre CBS-- yes they sound different than new P basses to me.) The 01 Jazz is total stock just real nice tone and growl. I dig me some Fender basses!!!!! I'm ready for another gig this Friday and Sat. Can't wait to light 'em up!!!

Yeh Sabre Lane-- don't let me discourage you. You could very well end up with the kick buttess, moosess, black cat scratched bass there is. I hope so anyway. Then you can tell me how you done it!!!!

Told you so. I hate being right all the time. It may be a little early to say it but, it's inevitable.
