Heey, some stupid questions, but I reallly need to know and I used the search option, but couldnt find anything useful for me. So anyway:
I've got a mexican standard P-bass. And I'd like to replace the pickguard (and spraypaint it). So I was browsing to see which one I should get (by the way, anyone knows where to order original Fender pickguards who ship internationally, I dont live in the US)

http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0991376000

So, according to the link, the only pickguard that will fit a mexican P-bass is the '62 (the 4th). I thought this was a bit uh akward? Anyone who knows if others will fit..or is ''Deluxe Series Precision Basses (Mexico)'''. I'm somewhat confused right now.

And I heard someone once said that pickguards should have some aluminium thing? I'm a bit of noob in this stuff..so...for what is it exactly? Or is it already ON a Fender pickguard if I'm going to order one?

Last question. I was told NEVER to remove the strings all at once when changing strings. But this does not apply when changing a pickguard right. I mean, how would you otherwise can replace it :O

Thats about it. I'd be VERY thankful, if someone could answer my questions.

thx :)

Most PGs will fit, the problem is with the hole patterns. I can't help you but this site should.

I've seen some P bass PGs with this foil on it. I'm supposing it is shielding. Probably advisable to have it if the PG doesn't come with some already attached. It will be available from good music stores or from a tech/luthier.

Don't worry, that only really applies to leaving the strings off for weeks or months on end (and even then it doesn't really cause problems. It's really more geared towards acoustic guitars). Taking all the strings off at once for a few minutes/hours to replace a PG, pickup or w/e aint gonna do much. Even when changing strings it's not a big deal but I find i better to do string changes one by one as it is less stress on the neck (keeps the tension on the neck and reduces unnecessary strain in being re-tensioned).

Sorry not to be of more help but I hope it helps somewhat... :)

I agree with Ally on this.

I also agree with Ally. I have read that it is okay to remove all the strings at once, for changing and cleaning the fretboard purposes. You can put a new pickguard on with the strings still on. Just loosen them up a little and slide the pickguard under them. Then pull the protective film off.

www.pickguards.com is the direct link to the WD pickguard makers and will give you more options.

Removing all the strings at once will not harm your guitar. I have had all the strings off of guitars for over 6 months and no damage was done.

No that's only in most fender guitars afaik, both the J bass and the P bass PUs are screwed into the body itself. Take care not to be too over zealous in taking the PG off though, I've severed my pickup wires so many times doing that

Ok, so after painting (just normal plastic paint) the pickguard and shielding the back (it was already shielded a bit, but not all, so i did some more)...i put it back on the bass. BUT: NEW PROBLEM! When playing my bass, there seems to be A LOT more noise. soo, anyone knows what this could be? could the extra shielding have made it worse?

THANKS again

Does removing the pickguard make the noise go away? I would try that first.
What did you use to paint it?
What did you use for shielding? You may have gotten the wrong type of shielding tape. Something like this is what you should have used.

Havent tried removing the pickguard yet, because i'm afraid that unscrewing and screwing too much will ruin the wood (happenend to my old bass :( )
i used normal plastic paint. as for shielding, it wasnt copper tape, it aluminium. the old shielding was also alu.
but today i asked my bass teacher about it. She told me that its probably something with the tone pot. cause the noise is less noticeable when turned down. and the knob was turning really weird, not smooth. so maybe i did something in the proces of replacing. I thought i was careful though :( i'll take it to the store, as soon as possible, cause Í'm also a noob with wiring and all that :(

Thank you for your reply!! if anyone else has a suggestion, do post it :)
