Hi there,

I was wondering which is the RIGHT FENDER DEFAULT relief value for a Fender American Standard Precision Bass 2008. The thing is, there's a difference between what's mentioned in the Fender Owner's Manual and the Fender Online Bass Guitar Setup Guide...

Note that I have a radius of 9.5"

- The Owner's Manual guide value is .015"
- The Online Setup Guide value is .012

Here's a screenshot from the Fender Owner's Manual page 12 (page 8 Adobe Reader toolbar):

and here, a screenshot from the Fender Online Bass Guitar Setup Guide:

Here is the link to the Fender Owner's Manual:

and here is the link to the Fender Online Bass Guitar Setup Guide:

Thanks in advance!

I'd say it depends on your style of play. Pick play go lower. Finger play go higher. Thank you for submitting a VERY VALID QUESTION! SO MANY on here are just BS. Your's however is VERY VALID. Fender recently updated their setup guidelines.

Yeah I never measure I just set the action as low as I can, play it like I normally do, and if it buzzes I raise the action a wee bit until it stops buzzing. If it still is too high I know I need a fret leveling.

Since I tend to lose the feeler gauges, I've learned to set the relief without them, but almost in the same was as illustrated above. I capo the 1st fret, and fret at the last note. Sighting down along the edge of the fretboard and down the string (the string is flat), I adjust the relief to be flat by eyesight.

Then, I pluck a note with the string still fretted at the last fret. I then adjust the relief until a note gently played buzzes and frets out. When the note buzzes against the frets, I know the fretboard is relatively flat with respect to the fretboard (assuming the frets are also relatively level).

I then add a little bit of relief until a gently plucked note *just* sounds without buzz. This generally gets you in the ball park of the measurements listed above in a couple of minutes with no tools other than the truss rod tool. I then take off the capo and adjust to taste.

Hope this helps...

-Tim

Thanks guys!

Good to know that I should be refering to the Online Setup Guide instead of the Owner's Manual...
