hey PJB; To much fun being a pin cushion right? I second the thumbs up.

I don't know how many times you get poked with a needle, I can't get used to it. I don't understand heroin addict, and probably never will.

Brotherdave, do you find these throwback version of the decade (VM 70s, CV) good? I like them because it paints a brush of the whole decade, instead of just one year. Plus it gets kids excited to buy an actual music instrument(s).

The ones I've tried yes. Solid playable instruments that look great and sound very respectable. I tried the Squier fretless Jazz and while it played well the electronics were anemic compared to the CV 50's Precision and the VM Jazz. I played all 3 through a Mark Bass CMD112 combo with identical settings. I was jonesing for a fretless that day. The VM and CV basses were way, way louder. That sort of put me off the fretless Squier Jazz trail.

Like I said I would have taken the Lake Placid Blue CV 50's P-bass home but the last thing I really need is another single coil first generation P-bass.

I see a new combo in my future before another gigging bass. I love my micro combo but it is entering it's 3rd year of heavy use and frankly I've used it more than ever the past year since starting to use it at indoor gigs patched to the beefy PA with subs. I've not been taking a backup amp to indoor gigs either. If it blows I can patch from my Bass Driver to the PA with subs so I sort of have a backup plan but not really a backup amp and generally the sound tech doesn't feed bass to the floor monitors, only to the mains and subs claiming the floor monitors won't take it for long. I haven't used my stack for anything but outdoor gigs since June of last year. When I bought that little combo I was going to use it at rehearsals and never intended to use it at gigs but that is what is happening and I'd feel better with a backup. I've looked over the entire Fender line and sadly there's nothing there that fits my needs.

Ugh, you know I should watch what I say, I never even thought of Type 2's. My father in law is a T2 also. I might have jinx myself here fj...I hope not.

Hey brotherdave; Have you checked out the Hartke Combos? Very solid.

Aluminum cone speakers do not sound organic to me. They sound sterile, brittle and they separate from the surround far too soon. I like the Hartke heads. BUT (notice that was a big but) the aluminum cone speakers are so not me. I recently went over the Hartke LH1000 head patched into an Avatar Neo cab and cranked it, and it might be the most bang for buck head out right now. Seriously, that is a real value buy and an impressive head for the dollars. However I want traditional paper cone speakers. So that sort of puts me off the Hartke combo trail. But that LH1000 head is really a tremendous buy. Unfortunately I don't need a head for a stack right now. I'm set in the stack head department and with a backup there too. What I need is a light, small and durable traditional sounding combo. The three I'm considering are the Carvin micro 12, the Ibanez Promethean single 10 box and the Mark Bass CMD112. I really do not want to go bigger than a 12 inch speaker and I'd rather keep it to a single 10 in a box that is 12x12x12 and weighs 25 pounds or less. The Mark Bass has obvious limitations as it farts out fast when you put the lows to it which makes me lean toward the Carvin 3 way 12. I'm probably going with the Carvin. What I don't like about the Carvin is that it is only 250 watts, but otherwise the Carvin seems absolutely perfect for my needs. If I can find some method to tilt it or otherwise point it at my head like a monitor, it might be ideal. I'd prefer a tube preamp but that adds weight. That Promethean tilt back stand is SO SIMPLE and so appealing. I'm trying to figure out how to put one on my little Line 6 amp. Coat hangers? Superglue on a picture frame? I usually lean it against the floor monitor but sometimes it vibrates off and winds up pointing straight up. I've had KICK BACK amps. I don't like them. They are too big and boxy and heavy. Just put a stand on the back please.

FUNNY but my first amp was a Gibson Atlas. Weighted about 90 pounds with 1x15 and maybe had 40 watts with a tailwind. BUT it had a way to tilt it back built in. I don't want a cab to get fatter just so I can tilt it. I want the cab to be compact with some way to tilt it back and point it at my head and it must have an XLR out. We basically are talking about a picture frame apparatus. Then, I want to pick it up with one hand without either of my torn rotator cuffs objecting too much and place it in the trunk of a compact car. The Fender TV 10 does NOT fit that scenario as it is too big and too heavy and would never be considered a micro bass amp. And Fender cut out all the amps that maybe would get close. Maybe a new line is coming. I hope so. Check the current BASSMAN line. It is ONE CAB.

Make a Bassman with 250 watts, that is 12x12x12 with a tweeter and some tilt back mechanism. Make it under 26 pounds. Make it BASIC. I will then consider it. Right now Fender has nothing I need in the amp department.

There are three other companies that do.

Brotherdave, I find it sterile if it's volume is less than 1, @ 2 it becomes alive and not brittle. I used to have the same opinion until the saless person told me to turn up the volume a bit. He was right. From then on I was hooked on the brightness and the 'warmth' of the XL cabs. It could also be that it worked with the sound I was looking for? Sounds that we like are so subjective. I'm not sure if they still sell their paper cones (VX models) cabinets. They did sell VX combos awhile back. Are the Avatar cabs affordable? I used to think they were a boutique brand?
