Went to GC and Son-in Law bought a usb keyboard, they treated him very well and beat the internet price.

First off, they had NO American Standards in stock, lots of Squiers though.

Played the American Special Candy Apple Red with Maple! Hated it! frets stuck out and finish was poor.

Other Special Precisions were White with rosewood, same as Saturday.

They had a Special Jazz in Sunburst which was absolutely beautiful.

I played everything through an Acoustic 600 and Acoustic 4x10 cab., Brother Dave, you were right, they're not that great.

Sound wise, a Classic Vibe Precision sounded better than anything else.

To sum it up, an American Special won't be something in my future, unless someone wants to give me one to shut me up :) .

I really liked the single coil Lace Placid Blue Squier Classic Vibe Precision '50s I played at GC a lot. But I don't need another single coil bass. It is a good one though. Never tried the 60's version but it is probably a good bass too.

Brotherdave, do you find these throwback version of the decade (VM 70s, CV) good? I like them because it paints a brush of the whole decade, instead of just one year. Plus it gets kids excited to buy an actual music instrument(s).

How's this for irony - my local *independent* has one of the new Specials. Overall, I am very impressed, though the neck profile is something you may want to try. I would describe it as in-between a traditional P profile and a more slender J-type profile. There's a nice roll on the fretboard edge. The staff cranked it up while I was there, sounds like a P to me. Has a '70-ish black logo. Pleasant weight, fit and finish looks fine.

I visit it every Tuesday when I take my daughter in for lessons - let me know if I can answer any questions, albiet long-distance. If I were in the market for a P, I would definitely consider it.

LawDaddy, you should do a review anyway, for us not fortunate enough to try this bass on our own.

Here in Pennsylvania, they're $949 for a Precision.

By all means, do a review, another set of eyes with another opinion always benefits.

Well, I wasn't going to Zod, but since you keep missing work, the package never shows up at the house. So I canceled and went to get it lasered :P

Too late for that LD, it's like trying to bring back a bullet after it's left the barrel.
