Went to GC today as planned and tried out an American Special, white with rosewood. I also played an American Standard, white with maple, both through a B11i5 Ampeg.

Comparing Red Delicious Apples to Granny Smith's, the neck on the Special was more to my taste, with the finsih on the neck of the Standard a lot nicer, but the neck was very nice.

The Special was considerably heavier than the Standard, which I liked a lot, It was a lot heavier than my FSR MIM Precision and almost as heavy as my VM Jazz. The finish on the bodies was great on both.

Hardware on the Standard was better.

Standard had more power, nothing to really say the Special was weak, because it wasn't.
I ran identical settings on the amp, played the Special at 7/8, 1/2 on the Standard.

Tone? Both of them performed admirably, both had great thump, both had the high end, the Standard came out ahead on highs, probably because of the bridge.

Rosewood was a lot nicer on the Standard, it had a real nice grain and was just nicer.

Fit and finish were both good, except for the necks they both were good.

IMO, if I could get a Standard with the weight and heft of the Special, that would be my next bass, Candy Apple Red with a Maple neck.

Like I said, it' just my own personal opinions, don't be hatin'

Rats, typo, both had rosewood necks and the Ampeg was a BA115.

There, I can spell.

gig bags are for hippie college girls playing their acoustic guitars....I keed, I keed...

I was told by my local music store that Fender is delayed in bringing anything in - they were told Sept before getting any new Fender. Squiers are still coming in. They are losing to the big online retailers and their physical stores - ie. GC/SA. If I get a chance to head south of town, I might hit GC to try it out.

Yeah, it was nice to be out @ 2pm...but, it was snowing again  Can't win. :x

Thought you'd be in bed after the last couple days or watching Telemundo. Too bad that Fenders are becoming "chain" store brands, it's not a good sign.

Definitely try and play one, I'd like to hear your thoughts. I want to play another one, like I always say, play every one you can.

Sorry about the snow, but you do live in the great white north. :P  :P

I think the American Standard or higher model always get the best hardware - tuners, knobs, etc. Little things that make the price so much higher. Even the wood is supposed to be better.

hahahaha...I don't get Telemundo up here...Some other Latino channel, but I get HBOLA - yes HBO Latin :)
Yeah, I have to try it out. Maybe I'd head to Appleton GC to try it out.
You make it seem that I live in Canada...wait, GB is higher than most of Eastern Canada...LOL.

My opion? You gotta share that.

Thanks for the review Ox.

Fender has got to cover every possible price point. I, as everyone else, see this series as bringing the Highway Ones and American Standards closer.
I have not played, nor seen, any of the new Am. Specials. I am curious about them, but if i was to spend that much money, I might as well spend a little more and get the "real" deal.
IMO my American Standard Jazz is the most fantastic bass. So smooth, sonically awesome, resonant, most lightweight bass I have owned. Quite a few of the other Standards have felt just a nice. My Highway One is nice, heavy but nice, but the difference between the two is a mile. With the "HO", I feel "blue-collar". A great average, bare bones bass. It gets the job done well. With the Standard, I am "white-collar". So smooth and refined. I try to play the Ho, but the Standard is just too good to put down.
JMO
And I watched Telemundo today. 8)

Sorry pal, you're up there.

Why don't you get Mike to record some Telemundo and send them to you?

My Am. Std. feels good. In my situation, I had to make a choice and live with it for a long time. it was a clincher for me when they had just hung it. No one had screwed with yet. All the plastic covers were in place still. Including the protectors on the tuning keys.

That's awesome. I got my black & maple P-bass like that. The guy brought in from the back unopened in the factory box. I took everything.
But then i sold it one day.
My American Standard is second-hand. Guy before me was more into 5's.
