I don't have a P Bass anymore...but I do name them all :)

'87 is Edna, after the most awesome great Aunt and best sister in law to my grandmother...'99 is Eve, after my youngest...then my Squier - Cassandra, just a name, Jeannette for the BG29, and last - Beatrice, my late dad's acoustic guitar.

How bout yours? What did you name her?

I've never really named my basses, but am curious about others'. However;
I have a Blue Flower Pbass that was dubbed "Delilah" by a bandmate.
And I also have a '62RI Pbass that I would probably call "Granpa" because it sounds like an old Grandpa. Or maybe "Doug", after my authorized Fender serviceman because it seems like I am always bringing it to him for adjustments and repairs. Ha ha!

I have 4 basses that I've named out of 75 plus. These are not the most valuable instruments I've had, just the best playing and sounding ones. I've actually would have lost count of the unnamed ones that came and went and even of the unnamed ones that came and stayed for miscellaneous reasons if not for calling them by a NUMBER instead of a name.

I dub ONLY the special ones that I am positive I will always own. I'm careful about that. They don't get a name for a very long time. Then, once named they are never sold. You don't sell your family. I modify the named basses as I please since they are PLAYER instruments anyway, not collector class pieces in any regard.

It is sort of like being a farmer and naming one of your pigs. You are never going to enjoy eating "Arnold" or get around to selling "Arnold" at the Saturday livestock auction, but pig 238 you can sell no problem, or on a cold winter's day turn him into BBQ!

OOPS! Left out the names of my musical family members. BLONDINE, SAPPHIRE, SMOKY and CAROL. Carol is the only one without an engraved neckplate because she is neck through. (I'm sure you can figure out what bass Carol is.) Smoky is the only one without a girl's name. It has a generic name...like a bear.

I have too many named basses really.

OK for 50 Extra BROTHER DAVE POINTS. UNSCRAMBLE THE NAMES & DESCRIPTIONS TO MATCH THE BASS WITH THE NAME!

NUMBER 1. BLONDINE

NUMBER 2. SAPPHIRE

NUMBER 3. SMOKEY

NUMBER 4. CAROL

A. Fender 1951 REISSUE CIJ sunburst P-BASS 05-06 model with GHS 3050 Regulars, pickup/bridge covers, Leo Quan BAIII bridge and Lindy Fralin Split Coil First Generation Pickup and Vitamin-Q cap set up with GHS 3050 REGULAR Precision Flatwounds. The most vintage sounding bass of the four.

B. Ibanez SRX700, STOCK except for Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats. Cherryburst with no guard. The only active EQ bass I've ever named. Solid playing bass but so nice I don't gig much with it.

C. 1953 Precision Style PARTS BASS. Vintage white with white guard. Some Fender parts but most are not. Seymour Duncan SCPBIII Quarter-Pounder, Thomastic-Infeld EB344 PowerBass strings, copper shielded, Vitamin-Q cap and a glaring departure from stock is a period incorrect Made in China Jay Turser 12 inch radius neck with rosewood fretboard. With the tone cranked wide open it really cuts through anything.

D. Black with red tortoise guard 1995/1996 Ibanez TRB70 with Bill Lawrence P/J Pups, Bill Lawrence Volume/Blend/Tone control setup requiring two Vitamin-Q caps and three 250K CTS pots with Fender Jazz Bass knobs instead of the stock Ibanez knobs, double pointed mid 90's Ibanez TR headstock and rosewood fretboard loaded with GHS 3025 LIGHT Precision Flatwounds. Gobs of vintagey tone but can also get some 80's funk sounds.

Other than the A & B, these are basses other players would consider JUNK. I love 'em!
Good luck!

My 78 P was named 'Dee dee' by our guitar player/singer, as it reminded him of a bass used by Dee dee ramone, its blonde, with black pickguard, and maple neck/fingerboard. Its the one bass that I can't see ever see myself without......

So, 'Dee dee' she remains! :D

Dee dee Ramone is listed as a user of SPB-3s on his PB according to Seymour Duncan's description of said pups. :)

Wow - I guess she fits the name more than I realised

I have four Precisions, but only two have names. My '51 RI is "Doris," and my AV '57 is "Sheila." I've tried naming the others, but nothing took. Guitars are the same: the only ones I called by name were "Lester" ('70 Les Paul Deluxe gold top) and, of course, "Chester" ('63 Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gent) although I sometimes refer to my Samick HF-650 archtop as "Jazzbo."

i don't tend to name inanimate object, no matter how beautiful they look or sound. however my friend named his Gibson Flying V "clemantine" after the guitar from the Xbox game Brutal Legend...

though saying that my main cable is called "burney" after slightly burning it :/

The names my basses have are just to identify them to the guys when I need to explain which one I'm going to use at a gig. I don't always use the same bass. One is called the Surf bass, the Cowboy, the Relic, the Classic and so on. :D
