Me and a few friends are trying to start a band but can't find a bassist. I've been playing guitar for a year am pretty decent. I was curious if I could use the experience from there to adapt to the bass guitar fairly easily in a month or so. I've played my friend's bass but we play with opposite hands so I couldn't get a feel for it. Should I go ahead and try to learn bass? Would my guitar skills help me enough to play in a band in a month or so?

They are two very different instruments, you would be able to get the basics and play a standard root note bass line within a month but it would take much longer to expand your playing to some more complex grooves.

If you can't find a bass player and your music style requires one, then I would. It's a fun instrument to play anyway even if you didn't play it in a band.

Well how do you think I started bass man? I played guitar and I never got a part in a band because the group I hung out with already has 3 guitarists (two mains one back up) a drummer, a pianist, and 2 vocalist, I thought I would just be a part of the sound team for my career untill the day I heard that their bassist was going to college the next year, so, of course I got to work learning! lol, I used the Hal Leonard instructional book, It did good for me. For $20 it came with the teaching book, Intructional DVD, and the cd with the instrumentals to the learning songs on it. I personally reccomend it. But... it did have a sloppy illistration on how to replace strings... which is something I still struggle with. Also, the good part about being a bassist, is it seems as everyones looking for one, an example is your band. I learned all the basics within Id say a week of pretty much constant playing. But also a warning is that you need a good bass to go along with good skills. It helps alot. But unfortunatley, the only thing your guitar knowledge will help you with is finding notes that support your guitar part, and your strumming skills wont help much either, that was something I didnt enjoy at first. But hey, now I only play bass. I use my guitar from time to time, but Im a full time bass player.

In my opinion, learning the bass would also help your guitar playing skills. I started out playing rythym, and took up the bass also because there was a need in our church band for one.

The things I learned to make the bass more interesting and fun in the music bridged me towards more lead skills on the 6 string. Its a great finger exercise especially on the Fenders.

Give it a shot. I played guitar for 10 years before I picked up my first bass. Just learn your role. You have to lock in with the drummer more than ever.

If you have a good unterstanding of chords and scales than yes, by all means grab a bass. I wish I would have learned more scales and chords in the early years of my playing. For me, I'm a bassist and a drummer, it's easy for me to lock in with drummers. I can read them easier and know where their comming from and where their going to. You should be able to utilize your guitar playing to help fit in with the guitar players. Also, throw away every pick you own! Learn how to use all 5 digits on your hand. If you have enough strumming experience than you can learn the Double Thump Double Pluck rather quick. Like someone esle on here put, Guitarists are a dime a dozen. I was one of two bassist in my home town. It sounds like you're in the same situation. I'd make the move if I were you, plus most bassists are more relaxed than guitarists... oh and bassists don't have an ego the size of Canada.

Sorry, we do tend to be smart $@!'s.

yeah i would definately try it out no matter how long you have been playing. you shouldnt shut out any instrument just because you have been playing this or that for so long or not very long. you may fall in love with it, you never know. and noone is askin you to give up your old instument, if you try it out and dont like it and would rather be doin sumthin else then move on. i wouldnt want to limit any experiance if its thrown towards me like that. i say gave it a shot man.
