The reason why I'm posting this is, I been playing bass since 1969. I only bass that fits me is a P-bass, and then I tried other basses, and you know what I had to find out? The Precision bass is the funk, the soul and the groove of recorded music. I tried 6 Jazzes, three musicmans, and a musicnman sabre. Three Yamahas', and my biggest mistake was letting go, my 1974 natural P-bass, with the "slim" neck. And, don't even think about G&L's, no where near a Fender P-bass

I'm the same, I've never vibed with anything but a P bass. Fender Japan makes a 70's P bass that is just killer, think Sid Vicious' bass. The Fender Japan stuff is amazing, and really inexpensive considering the quality instruments you can get. They come up on ebay now and then. That's the only P I'm aware of that's actually built to 70's specs. Other great vintage spec split coil P basses are either the AVS 62' or 57' P bass', Fender Japan also makes their own models of these, which are amazing, though alot of the Japanese basses take a bit to track down as they need to be bought used in the US due to Fender's import export policies.

One really great bass that is a killer deal is the Mexican Made Classic 50's P bass...incredible instruments that rival the AVS 57P's for half the price. I recommend you start there if you can find one to play...it might be love at first site.

Good luck finding the right one for you.

My first bass was a cheap $@! jazz, but later I finally bought me a P-bass. like everyone else I lost that bass but thur the years I played many basses like jazzes, washburn, Ibanez but I had to go back to the P bass. Its the sound and feel that does it for me. To me the P-bass is the only bass that does the job in the 4 string department.

A nice year? For me the Best P bass sound I've yet heard live was an original 59 with a maple neck. The player had it strung with a 10 year old Jamerson LaBella set and he pretty much choked every note with his hands - no foam mute. Similar to Jamerson's recorded sound but much fruitier (less dry sounding). I was even more envious when he told me he had two (!) - the other had rosewood fretboard.

A nice year?

Any from 1951 to 2008 would probably be okay.

Let me hip you to something. If you hear somebody playing an original '59 P-bass, and the tone and the "mojo" just knocks you out....

It wasn't the bass. Word to your mother: it's not the arrow, it's the archer.

Yo funk-friendly fretted, & unfretted.

My P-Bass is SN# 44032; I bought it in '68 as a '59 model. Some guitar dating sites make it a 1960.

What's definitive in this gig? Popping the neck off (yikes)

Tunefully

2008.

Fender says...

Quote:
The new American Standard Precision basses feature our new high-mass vintage bridge, a thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance, new and improved Fender tuning keys that keep the classic look but are 30 percent lighter, a richer and deeper neck tint for a more elegant appearance, a great-looking glossed maple or rosewood fingerboard and satin back for smooth playability...

The new American Standard :!:
