I like the tone of the stock PUPs on my P bass but notice a lot of people like the Seymour Duncans, anyone care to comment what they like about them?

Higher output, and a very distinctive scooped sound. Tons-o-bass, and very present upper mid-range. Played wide open with a pick, reminds me of Mike Dirnt in spades. Rotosounds + SD QP = '90s punk.

However, it is a more versatile pup than most give it credit for. Roll back the tone knob, and the result is a very nice warm tone played finger-style.

The QPs also react very nicely to picking/playing dynamics - they react real nice under hand.

Highly recommended.

FYI: For many (myself included) who don't desire the upper mids, the DiMarzio Model P is a great choice.

To say they are HIGHER OUTPUT is true to an extent, but it is how they accomplish that which is the key. The larger pole pieces give them much more sensitivity than pickups with traditional sized pole pieces. Also the pole pieces are stainless instead of alnico.

Usually to get higher output you have to overwind, but with these the larger pole pieces do the trick. Since they are not overwound very much they retain plenty of the upper mids of a stock wound pickup.

I use the Quarter Pounder single coil on my '53 P-Bass clone. It is an airy, punchy pickup and I like it a whole lot.

I play flat wounds and like the sixties sound so I am not going for bright but punchy is good. Would you all still recommend the SD QP?

I have a set of Q pounders. They are in the box on the shelf. Everyone has an opinion and mine is = they are louder than the pickups you are using now probubly, but to me they sound kind of "Blatty". No kind of subtle tone to them. All loud no sound. Kind of like an old PV guitar amp. I don't think they would sound good for sixties type music at all. You'd be over there going "blat, blat, blat", while the rest of the music is smoothe. Remember that's just an opinion guys.

Long time 'lurker', first-time poster, and big fan of the P bass - hi everyone.

I have SD QPs on my P and like them a lot - we play hard rock and funk metal, and it is a great pickup for that. Having a partial/complete valve amp will warm up the sound.

I also have Roto 99 piano-design strings on the bass - which, plus the SD QPs, should give some idea of my tonal ideal!

Thanks

What are Roto piano design strings-? I guess I missed out on those somewhere. The title sounds like it's obvious but you never know. Are you saying Rotosound makes piano strings and you put those on your bass? If so what guage are they?

If you're playing '60s music with flatwounds, you may just want to consider a Fender '60s Custom Shop pickup. I do get some nice '60s tone on my P bass with flatwounds and and DiMarzio Model P, though.

I have a Classic '50s with a QP and Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats on it. I gigged with it steadily and my band loved the way it sat in the mix: very present and toneful, without having to crank it up too loud. We played noisy honky-tonks and I plugged into an Ampeg B100R combo, with a DI into the board for the dancers. The amp sat on a stand and I aimed it at the drummer's head -- he had no problems hearing me. I happened to run into him and his wife at a cafe a couple of years after the band broke up and he told me "I don't pay much attention to the bass sound [!] but that orange (actually, fiesta red) one was real special."

Last year I got an AV '57 and left it stock, and I haven't A/B'd the two Ps but the new one ain't no slouch. I played it at a theater function Saturday night and got compliments, and that was with a Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0-10T!

I was wondering about that too.

Thanks.
