I used to work as a bass-tech when I was younger for the bassist for Beck, Justin Meldal-Johnsen.

I'm now looking at selling it. I've spent hours researching the value and I haven't been able to determine a range or even a color for this bass.

It's an American Precision Bass and I don't know the color. It looks lie a green-silver. Anyone know?

Pictures can be viewed here: http://www.grantklein.com/download/fender-pbass/

Per Fender's site, it looks like it could be 1999 or 2000.

The serial number is N9416824.

It is also has a real signature by "Donald Duck Dunn" on the bass head. Not sure if that increases or decreases the value.

Any help would be appreciated. Just want to make sure I'm asking fair market value and I don't mislabel it when I sell it.

Thanks in advance.

Grant

Just my opinion, but if that bass was a gift, especially from someone such as JMJ and signed by Duck Dunn, i would not even think about thinking of selling it. I don't know your reasons, but a gift like that would hold a sentimental value greater than money. Just my opinion.

It does look like Inca Silver. Pricewise, I have no idea.
That's a smooth bass.

I actually purchased it from him when I worked for him back in 2002. Back when I was 19 when I didn't have any money at all. My reasoning is that it's sitting in my closet, not being played, and I'd rather have another bassist play it, than sit in a closet. And, of course, I'd never give it away for free.

Based off the serial #, it looks like it's a '94.

"N9" serials are 99 model year. Model years run on a fiscal year July 1 through June 30th. So it could have been made as late as June 30, 2000 but would still be a 1999 model. I disagree with it being a 1994. If a 94 model then the serial should start "N4."

The color is SAGE GREEN METALIC.

If you have evidence proving the authenticity of the autograph such as a photo of Mr. Dunn signing the instrument, then it would be worth more to someone collecting Mr. Dunn items. Otherwise it is a defacing and excludes the instrument from collector class. Without evidence you would need to have the autograph authenticated by a respected autograph authority. I list such an authority on my website.

As a general rule it is best to get a signed 8x10 photo of celeb players, not let them sign your instrument. 50 years from now will anyone remember Duck? Maybe and maybe not. As a general rule defacing an instrument in this manner harms the collector value to all but Duck Dunn collectors. Signatures are markdowns in value as a rule, but there are exceptions such as Elvis, John Lennon and very few others that actually increase the value of the instrument with solid evidence or authentication that the signature is genuine.

I'd say it is worth about what any other 99 American Standard P-bass is worth in your market, less a deduction for the defacement on the headstock. Here in the Carolinas a going price near mint would be $850 for a dealer to private party sale, less $50 to $100 for the defacing. If you get the signature authenticated it might be worth about the going retail to a Duck collector. Of course the signature could turn out to be a forgery, but that is highly unlikely considering the source. As Duck's fans die off in the next 25 yrs or so and his legacy fades the instrument can continue on indefinitely. Potential owners 50 years from now will wonder why someone wrote their name on this bass. I see lots of signed instruments, often on the back of the headstock for single signed instruments. Hardly EVER will it increase the value and almost always is a markdown. In this case right on the front of the headstock, it's a larger markdown than on the back of the headstock.

++ I'm backing that up-- this guy knows his stuff. Too bad but I could probubly ask almost any 23 year old who Duck Dunn is and what do you think they would say? Of course maybe they might know who the Blues Brothers are. Then you could explain it that way.
