I have an American Deluxe Jazz V. It was my only bass for a while. Growing up I had always wanted an American Deluxe Precision. The chance came up to own one. It was a 2007, in the chrome silver and a maple board. It was in mint condition and came with the new hardshell case rather than the molded ones. I got an insane deal on it and couldn't turn it down. I use it a lot for my University of Toledo jazz band. I play both my jazz and my precision, I think that the precision gets more play time though. I am a proud owner of both!

My view is the reason the Jazz bass didn't "replace" the P-bass notwithstanding all the improvements and thought that went into it back in 1960, is that the P-bass tone is still unique to that instrument. I can get my Jazz basses to sound similar to my Precisions but not quite the same, the P-bass tone is still in its own sonic place. That's why I own/play both basses.

By all means, blame all of us, it was our fault. Self preservation at all costs.

It doesn't matter how many of us need to be thrown under the tram.

Tell her what I tell my wife -- she loves shoes, has probably hundreds of pairs for every imaginable situation. I too need the right "shoe" for what I'm doing, and sometimes it's a Jazz bass and sometimes it's a Precision (or a Rickenbacker, or a Hofner, or a G&L, or a Danelectro, or a T-Bird, etc...)

I did that with Spey fly fishing rods and it worked until I got to 22........

Incidentally, and apologies to digress slightly, but the American Deluxe models (both P & J), are the necks (scale length, I suppose) longer and with more frets than the Standard models, as my Warwick Streamer LX is?

At one time, when I was gigging steadily with a dance hall band, I had a Classic '50s P and a Standard fretless J. The Jazz had Antiquity II pickups and sounded pretty good. I was looking for a chance to use it and took it to the gig one night instead of the P, and the band made me go home and get the Precision! I took the hint and traded off the J.

Thank you. I see you have the Roger Waters. What a lovely 'P'! To my mind, the nicest out there.

If I let you into a secret, I tried to get a black pickguard and fittings from Fender (and elsewhere) to try to make my MIA Standard P look just like it.......

Incidentally, the pickguard: is it matte black? It looks it in the photos, but no Fender dealer would confirm either way.

Besides the fact that I have always wanted one, one of the reasons that I bought my '07 American Deluxe precision was the finish. It is the chrome silver finish, maple board, and the dark pearloid gaurd. Oh so sexy! I get remarks about it everywhere I go.

I have both, the P is my favorite sound, fit, balance and weight. I picked up a used active J with BAII bridge and SD pickups and it has much more middle and high tone than the P and can be adjusted over a wide range with the controls but for some reason I always find my way back to the P, I just identify with its sound much more. I tend to play sixtys tunes both rock/pop and Motown so it just fits.

I've been a J player for years, currently playing an 08 am.std OWRW, and just recently picked up a 10 am.std P OWRW. The J feels like home and I've always been able to find a sound that sits perfect in the mix.

I'm currently struggling to get a workable sound out of the P. It seem to lack a real fundament and is all mids. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm in a coverband with a +100 rep ranging everything from jazz to metal, playing both with a pick and fngerstyle. I'm running both basses through an SVT4PRO with a 610HLF. I also use a BA115HP for smaller gigs. Both fenders are strung with SS Rotos 50-110 (tuned DGCF).

I have a 65 & 75 P bass along with a 2005 Custom Shop 64 NOS Jazz Bass. I use the Jazz and 75 P Bass for gigging with the Jazz getting most of the work. It is an absolute dream to play with amazing tonal variations and a neck that is just so easy to move around on. I switch to the 75 Bass for the slower blues 12 bar type material as it just has that big bottom end punch and low end growl.

Some Jazz bass players have a hard time with the wider/flatter P-bass neck, but if you give it some practice time you'll find you can play a P-bass neck just as easily as you can a Jazz neck (unless you've got unusually small hands I suppose). But you have to devote enough time to become familiar with the necks on either.

Mastermold...You are absolutley correct. I have no problem with my P Bass necks as I started out only playing my P Basses for years. It is now a matter of the feel and sound I want for a particular tune that dictates which bass I use.

Muscle memory for the win...just like composing a complicated song or learning a new song, sometimes it takes awhile to move your hands to play the tune. After awhile, you just get used to it, and your fingers move flawlessly - muscle memory! :D
