I have a 97 deluxe precision bass that is powered by 9 volts . Is it possible to convert it to 18volts? If so how would I wire it ? Thanks in advance!

From my personal experience the 9-volt preamp was designed by John Suhr during his days at the Fender Custom Shop in 1995. John was chiefly responsible for the single-pole Jazz Bass pickups which were a standard feature on the American Deluxe Jazz Bass between 1995 and 1999.

Regarding your question, it's possible to install an 18V preamp on an pre-2002 American Deluxe bass. I've seen a 1997 4-string US Deluxe Jazz which was modded with SCN pickups and an 18V supply taken from a 2006 model on eBay. You should contact a professional luthier in order to make these changes.

Unfortunately no, the Suhr preamp can be powered only with a single 9V battery.

If you want an 18V supply, you must replace the Suhr preamp with the actual 18V preamp developed by Fender's R&D team unless you contact a professional tech to make the 18V conversion in your place.

Thanks Chromeface, I think I will just leave it as it was made for now. I have just read where there is a noticeable difference in headroom going to 18v.
