I have a Highway One P-Bass and bought an S1 switch. I found a wiring diagram for it but it describes a yellow wire coming from the pickup along with the white and black wires.

Does anyone know how to configure the pickup wiring so an S1 switch can be used?

Thanks

Well to be honest, most people with a stock S-1 are sooner or later trying to find a way out of having an S-1.

I'd stick with what you've got and sell the raw unused S-1 on eBay.

S-1 switches are about as reliable as brakes on a Toyota Prius when you happen to be transporting nitroglycerin.

Sorry that was cruel, but honestly....I can not count the number of people who have messaged me looking for help fixing an S-1 switch problem. It happens over and over again.

S-1 was a good idea on paper. So was the Bantam Bass Amp in 1972. Neither one worked long haul. Let it GO. Fender did.

Thanks for the reply.

I can imagine what it will do to the sound as I have a Gibson EB2 with a similar switch. I put an S1 into my Jazz Bass and I liked what it did, although the enhancement to the sound is probably opposite to what will happen with the P-bass. I still think it may be useful, though.

I think the pickup needs to be wired both in series and parallel and the switch selects which mode.

IMO/E the S-1 switch was/is useful on a jazz bass but on a P-bass it's not the same, it makes it sound weak and thin, and wimpy. I had a 2007 P-bass with the S-1 and never used it at all. I would not want another p-bass with that option.

YMMV

Thanks again.

Maybe I'm at the wrong forum. I'm asking for help on the pickup wiring configuration but I'm receiving opinions on how the bass sounds with the switch engaged.

Hey, it's your bass. Sorry I couldn't help with a wiring diagram on a worthless mod. Just trying to save you the trouble and aggravation.
A split coil pickup wired in parallel, you get a thin, weak tone. Why would anyone want that out of a P-bass? A P-bass does one thing and one thing well, it sounds like a p-bass.

Here is the diagram you requested: http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/bass_guitars/019-3260_62A_SISD.pdf

Thanks.

I have that diagram but it doesn't include the wiring of the pickup itself, which is different than the traditional (in series only) setup.

I'll check with a local guitar technician. If I can't get an answer there, I might go over to Guitar Center with my Philips head, find a used S1 P-bass and take a quick peek under the hood.

Alternatively you can use a push/pull switch. I have that on my jazz bass, and from what I hear they're more reliable than the S1 switches. It's definitely a more useful switch on a jazz bass, but it can't hurt to try it on the P.

Or you can use a push-push switch like the series/parallel button found on the Precision Bass Plus, one of George Blanda's late 1980's famous bass designs.

This switch is intended to work with the Lace Sensor P-Bass neck pickup, but with a few mods it can be also functional with the Lace Sensor J-Bass bridge pickup or both.

What exactly is the switch for on a p-bass?

Don't worry about that, the 2008 American Standard P-Bass doesn't use the S-1. Fender decided to not include that feature on this series to keep things simple.
