I'm torn between which one to buy. I actually had the 50's P a year or so ago and foolishly got rid of it! Cant say I've ever really played the Highway one, maybe once at guitar center.

The answer is so simple, really all you need to do is buy both.

Life it too short to deprive yourself.

Hey Dummy,

When you are dumb, you have to be tough.

You had a bass, it played and felt good...so you sold it.

You might have to play a few THOUSAND basses to find another one anywhere close to that one.

Congratuations...and thank you for not making me feel like the Lone Ranger for trading off one pretty special player once 42 yrs ago.

Later,
Dave

Damn Dave, don't you think your being a bit harsh?

Truthful, but harsh all the same.

Well to quote Duck Dunn (and this is a direct quote), "If the $@!& fits, wear it."

I was not trying to be harsh, but SYMPATHETIC. He wasn't the only one to trade off a magic player. I did it. Did I learn from that experience? FXXX yeah I DID.

Otherwise smart people do stupid stuff every day. EVERY day.

So I may be the STUPIDEST person on this site. I traded off the best playing bass of my lifetime. Never to be found again.

Did that idiotic trade FINISH me off? No.
DO I NOW KNOW BETTER than to do that again? YES. I do.

When I find an instrument now, I do NOT trade it.

You have to understand....in 1971 NOBODY had more than one instrument. IT just was not done.

So while I have a stable NOW, nobody had but ONE bass back then. It wasn't until the 1990's that having more than one instrument became KOOL.

If you're over 40, you've probably owned and sold what is now considered to be a vintage instrument. I know I am, and have.

Yep. I am that man. Twice, I have to confess. Never no more, not if I can help it

As I've said recently, these basses may all be cut from the same CNC machines but each piece of wood is different. If you find one you like, keep it and play the snot out of it.

Back to the subject at hand: apparently there have been a great many players who have been delighted with their Classic '50s Precisions. I'm one of them, in fact. I went through several basses trying to get "THAT" sound in a honky tonk band I was in. Then, on the advice of someone at talkbass.com, I ordered one in fiesta red (wanted honey blonde, but the dealer said it was discontinued in that color), put a set of Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats on it, and took it to rehearsal. Two bars into the first song, and everybody turned around to look and me and said "THAT'S IT!" A year or so after the band broke up, I ran into the drummer and his wife at a cafe. I joined them at their table, and after talking with the drummer about his latest basketball team (he's the middle/high school girl's bb coach at a local small district), out of the blue he said, "Do you still have that orange bass? Tell you what, I've played with a lot of bass players playing a lot of basses over the years, but that one was special."

I've never heard any raves over the Highway One, but then, around here everybody but me plays a black Jazz.

I still have my Classic '50s, even though I now gig with an American Vintage '57 -- a beautiful bass, which it should be for having a price about 2-1/2 times what I paid for the Classic.

Does the Classic '50s have the larger width/profile neck like the Roadworn? I love the neck on my Roadworn.

I believe the Roadworn is a Classic '50s with a relic'd nitro finish (as opposed to poly on the Classic). As far as I know, the specs are otherwise the same. I personally love the big P necks: I have a '51 RI, the Classic '50s, the AV '57, and an FSR with a fretless P neck.

Charles (Big Dog) Stallings wrote a song for you,,It's a doggone shame!!!!,,,lol

Your not alone,, I gave (gave) my PS 400 to a buddy/guitar player/friend who worked for ATel sound, I think back in 92 & moved to the bonnies saying I would never need it again,,UHMM,, I wasn't the only one headed for the hills!! Was in 3 /4 bands a year gigging again for a living. Sure could have used it again on all them outdoor gigs. I believe he moved to Ireland since I can longer contact him. The cheapest,,if you can find one,, is close to 2K in bad shape. I gave it away!! All I can think about nowa days is did he take it with him? Where is it? ???,,,????,,,???

Bad Human,, No Bone for that!

It's a doggone shame!
