best mute for a P bass? I just put my bridge cover back on my 65 and bought 1/2" thick rubber door insulation for the inside of the cover, it seemed similar to what was once on there and adheres to the chrome cover. Felt works good also. Foam mutes under the strings ruin intonation and don't sound the same IMO. btw; i use TI flats. :D

I've tried every type of foam imaginable. I agree that having the mute on top of the strings under the bridge cover works a little better. The closer to the bridge, the better. Another material I like is felt, roll a piece up to your liking and slide it under. A little different sound.

The best foam I found was what came with an air conditioner, to be used as insulation, it's a half inch thick almost 2 inches wide and the piece was 4 foot long. I think I have enough for awhile. I'm always on the lookout at work for packing and such, I have quite the collection.

I think the hand is the best mute.

Curiously, I think I saw a pic of a Carol Kaye with a length of tape (electrical??Masking?? couldn't tell) across the strings, taped on either end on the face. About 3 inches in front of the bridge, if I remember correctly.
