Was wondering why some do this. Sorry if I am missing the obvious.

Some censor it out of their pics, some list only a partial SN. Just wondering.

Only thing I can think of is so pirates don't get a serial # to help pass their fakes off with?

Maybe I am wrong but alot of guitars are stolen on a yearly basis. Stolen from cars, gigs etc... Let's say you purchase a guitar from a seller (Ebay or criagslist) & years later you sell it. You wouldn't want to tagged as a thief. You never know how many hands it may have passed thru. I assume some people have the serial number written down & keep them especially if they were stolen.

Moreover, if you post the full number then someone can list the item as stolen, and then attempt to "recover" (i.e. steal) it from you. It's happened. Scary thought  For that reason alone I'd never list a serial number, especially not the serial number of an interesting and scarce instrument, and especially not along with the kind of full details we tend to list when we're researching an unusual model - colour, hardware, unusual features, etc. Just imagine what a good false claim someone could build on the back of that lot...

Ah ha! That makes sense. Just another reason to keep your original sales receipt, too.

Amen to that! (And make sure you buy from someone you trust, too...)

Another reason is to hamper people making fake Fenders. They will try to buy enough authentic parts (say decals) to make something look real, at least in on line photos. But it's even better if they can get a real S/N that matches the supposed year and make they're trying to pawn off. Make the pics just fuzzy enough and have the S/N appear to check out ... and you may be able to fool a lot of people.

Agree that both false police reports and counterfeiting are two good reasons to not list the entire serial. However I want to know at least the first part of the serial before buying a used instrument to validate the year of manufacture. It is perfectly acceptable and safe to list the serial for online sales as E20XXXX with the "X's" representing the unrevealed digits. That gives prospective buyers enough information to validate the model year but doesn't give unscrupulous people enough information to accomplish their evil intentions.

Also while on the subject of serials I would like to share that I have prepared an addendum webpage on my bass website explaining both why and how I personally keep track of all my serials. This page is based on my experiences both in music (which is more of a hobby) and in law enforcement data entry/retrieval (which has been my primary income source for 17 years.) If you could use a good system to protect your gear, I urge you to read this page: http://brotherdave.com/add_protectyourgear.htm
I can't tell you how many people just don't have the serials to provide police and insurance companies. These people will NEVER get their gear back and will have more difficulty getting an equitable settlement from their insurance company!
