OK today I got my first Fender. I had never liked them because they all look the same, but I played a MIM P-bass today and I love it and now love Fender. I do have a few questions though. Ok first I want to know a way to find out what year it is(I bought it used) without having to take the neck off. I have the serial number if that will help in any way. Another thing is that I got this bass for 130 dollars out the door from a pawn shop. Is this a really good deal? I asked the person that gives me bass lessons and he said it was and so did I. The only thing is I'm not familiar with the Mexican made prices. The last thing is that it buzzes alot when I have the tone knob turned up past 2. This is a really bad buzz, does anyone know how to fix it?

Do they? :?

Ok so, you have got yourself a bit of a bargain there by the sounds (I REALLY need to start checking some pawn shops!) 130 dollars is about 75 quid and over here a MIM P bass is about 300!

You can use this to date your bass.

Your PUs will buzz when the tone is turned up, it will increase pretty much exponentially, but the problem is that there is normal buzz and then there's OTT buzz and it's hard to say which one it is, as obviously I (or anyone else for that matter) can't hear it.

See what you teacher thinks - if it s a problem then take it to a guitar tech and have it looked at. It might be fine (could be electrical appliances in your home interfering), or it could need a new pot or better shielding etc etc.

Hope that helps.

P-Basss should not buzz at all... the pickup is hum-cancelling.

Check the grounding on the amp. If it is still buzzing, then take it to a tech.

130$ for an MIM? Good deal.

Does the buzz go away when you touch a metal part on the bass?
It could be a bad ground. Sometimes the only thing required to fix it is to take the bridge off and remove the chrome plating from where the ground wire touches it.

Or it could need one of the things the other folks have mentioned. Without being able to hear it my guess would be a grounding problem, it needs better shielding, or the tone pot is bad.

Personally I think comparing a Jazz to a Precision is like comparing chalk to cheese!

Thanks for all the help guys. It does not stop when I touch a matal part so I don't think it is the ground on te bass itself. I am going to jave it chacked later this week though. I love it so far and hope to find more Fender's like this one. Once again thanks I will check back with you guys if I have anything else come up.

Sometimes taking it to a "pro" is the best thing to do especially if you're unsure of the problem. Good luck with the repair, and let us know what needed to be fixed. :)

Not real fair to the other models to post a poll like that here, we all prefer the p-bass, at least the majority of the members.

You got a SUPER deal.

If the Deluxe P had passive electronics (maybe it did at one time?) it would have made the selection a little more difficult for me in this poll. If you couldn't afford having both a P and a J, that would be the best of both worlds IMO.

Don't know how I missed the price you paid, bassmaster2010. That's a great deal even if you have to put some money into it. Especially if you can do some of the work yourself.

Hey guys, sorry it is stoping the buzz when i thouch the bridge. I took the bridge off, sanded it down a bit, and put it back together. Now it is still doing the same thing could it be a bad pot?

When it stops while you touch the bridge or the strings than it's a problem with the "ground" of the electricity. Connect your amp to the grounded cirquit only, than the buzzing should disappear.

Well I have tried everything, I have even taken the bridge off and sanded the back of it down to conduct electricity and that doesn't help either. It doesn't matter the circuit I plug it in on it still buzzes. I am taking it to the Fender certified shop near me tomorrow after my lessons to see if they can find the problem. If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know asap because I need it fixed by next Wednesday if possible.
