I have dabbled in playing bass for awhile now. I have used a friends Squier P-bass and I really love the sound and playability of that guitar. Now I know that I want to pursue my passion of bass playing so my question is, Whats your reveiw of the Fender Standard MIM P-bass?

I have played it myself and really loved it! (Lake Placid Blue/Maple Neck) I just wanted to see what my fellow bass sharks have liked/disliked about it.

By the way I'm new so be gentle :D

Welcome to the forum TBM! The Mexican Fenders are real Fenders and historically have had better wood, hardware and electronics than Asian made Squiers. They usually have better resale/trade-in value too when you get ready to upgrade.

However the quality gap has been closing between the Made in Mexico Standards and the better Squier series instruments such as the Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe series. People who own those Squier basses seem to universally rave that they are great value.

The color selection on the MIM Standards has really improved with the return of classic Fender colors like Lake Placid Blue and the too long absent Candy Apple Red.

From day one at Fender's Mexico play they was using ALDER body blanks to make the MIM Standards and stated that on the specification page too. However now they do not specify what wood they are using for the body. Some have said they have switched to BASSWOOD bodies on the MIM Standards. Many online Fender dealers continue to state they have alder bodies when that may actually not be the case.

Alder and basswood are both viable tonewoods for bass guitar bodies but they have slightly different tone properties. I actually like the mellower basswood tone fine, but some people prefer the traditional alder. Basswood has been used as the body tonewood on many Asian made guitars and basses for decades. Fender has used many other woods for basses too! Northern Ash on very early Fenders, Swamp Ash, Walnut and even some laminated bodies with several different woods.

The advice I'd give is to play several, even of the same model and then choose the one that plays and sounds the best to you.

Interestingly enough, Br Dave, the UK Fender website http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/search.php?partno=0190460700 doesn't specify a tonewood for the American Standard Series body either! Surely it must be an oversight - unless they've gone back to using ash interchangeably with alder for the MIA basses, which seems hard to believe these days. Merry Christmas, guys, anyhow!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I have played the Squier VM series and they are great guitars but the MIM Standards call my name. I'm really not a brand snob but something thats says Fender just wins in my book.
I will continue playing some and let you know what I decide. :D

I hear you, Tannu. Though I don't mind about the Squier logo (I have an old and much loved Squier Tele that I'd never sell) I do think the MIM P-Bass is a better choice, especially since the better (VM and CV) Squiers are so close in price these days.

You know, I was within a whisker of ordering a MIM (I fancied Candy Apple Red!) when I stumbled on my very favourite P-Bass, a ten-years old CIJ '70 RI, in my usual music shop. It cost a fair bit more than a new MIM, but I just couldn't leave it in the shop, it was that good.

Nothing beats hands-on and ears open, does it?

I'm Digging you on that Candy Apple Red. My newest is that color and it just screams awesome. Like a car in the same color, you know?

And apparently Mr. Fender and I shared the same love for it. Always wanted a Ford in that color.

Thanks again guys for all the replies.
I now have another situation......(Uh-Oh)

I have smaller hands and playing a P-Bass is no issue, but....I found a used Mustang bass and played on it and it was a bit of a releif on my hands and shoulders. The quality and fit was quite nice too.
Now i'm not gonna buy the used Mustang because she already had someone elses mojo (road scars) on her and I wanna buy a new one and put my own.

I guess the question is....what do you think of the P-Bass vs. Mustang bass?

( I know this is the P-bass forum but the Mustang is up against it) Thanks guys!

Well after a carefull evaluation I decided not to get the Mustang bass. Theres just too much slack in the strings and if your playing super fast it rattles your brain. Im sure with a pro setup it would be better, great bass but not for me.

J-7, I have played a few Jazz basses and love the necks. In fact I played the Geddy Lee bass and fell in love with that super thin neck it has......Uh-Oh.....I'm becoming a bass-o-holic....

We shall se what 2011 brings me...
